Those of you who have seen/used the RC-5 sheath... What are your impressions/thoughts on it?

Love it so far!! I still need to order a RAT fire starter, but until then I have an Izula kit w/ about 10' of paracord in mine. Knife, fire building and trap making all in one neat little package. Not to mention all the attachment methods really give a lot of options to frankenstein the Hulk(my RC5 is OD/OD/OD:cool:) to your gear.

It really nice and well made. Eagle Industries makes great stuff. They did the soft cast my HK Tactical .45 came in.

I like the velcro belt strap and compression leg strap, but the best feature is the secured pouch. I already have the RAT Firestarter in there and getting some survival items to put in the interior of it. Nice little package to take for a hike. I am thinking about strapping it to my lower leg like a dive knife when I fly. A survival kit is great, but can just become unreachable baggage in a forced landing. Pretty much say goodbye to anything not attached to you usually due to fire. I'm setting up the RC-5 sheath for a last ditch survival kit.

Nice thing about the RC-5 is that I know its strong enough to bust through plexiglass or cut through the aluminum skin.

It's a great sheath. The quality of materials and construction is superb. Plus, it offers a lot of carry options. My only complaint (and it's a small one) is that it's a bit big and bulky for the size of the knife. That's no problem at all as far as usefullness, but in terms of aesthetics I'd like something shorter/slimmer. For instance, I think I'd rather have an Izula type sheath for my RC-5 when carrying it on my pack. If I was just taking a short hike or doing outside work where I wasn't wearing a pack I'd find the Eagle Industries sheath with it's handy pouch to be perfect on my belt.

Overall the RC5 sheath is great ... I really like the well made sheath and with color option to match your gear...the pockeet seems nice size and can hold a mini PSK,I love the leg tie down as well.

I really like mine! As a matter of fact, I like it so much that I just got off the phone with Eagle Industries(the ones who make the RC-5 sheaths) in hopes that they offered a similar one that would fit my RC-6., but they don't :(

I am a fan of the Eagle sheath as well. It is very secure.

I do have to ask though--will we be seeing kydex/injection molded sheaths in the future? They suit my style of carry better!

Chris

The sheath would be extra great if they could make them fast enough to keep up with demand, I guess you cant rush quality though.

Is the pouch bigger than the pouch on a Spec Ops Survival sheath?

I hope in the future when they catch up with the RC5 demand, they will bring out one for the RC6 -- more my style of "survival knife".

It's a good sized pouch. I've got my ZT0200 in there, and there's a little room to spare.

The RC-5 sheath is a very nice peice. Well made and very heavy duty design. I really like the belt attachment system and the elastic leg strap works really well.

My only two complaints are that the pouch doesn't have a top flap, not that big of a deal if you secure your gear properly but it would still like to see a flap.

Also, the duel retention straps are a bit of overkill for me, but I realize that some would like them, so I'd like to see one or both of them be removable. i'd hate to have to cut one or the other off and permanently alter the sheath.

I'm sure anyone could find at least one thing they don't love or would change, but overall, I think it's about the best sheath going as far as factory sheaths are concerned.

The RC-5 sheath is very nice quality but I think there are ways to improve the design.
The double retention straps are the first feature that I didn't care for. I know the extra retention is necessary for a jump rating but other companies(Blackhawk, Spec-Ops) just use grommets so 550 cord can be used for the additional retention. I also don't like how stiff the straps are from the layer of plastic sewn into them. I was starting to cut the lower strap because I would hold the top one open and the bottom strap would get grazed during re-sheathing.
Solution: I cut off the top strap. I haven't jumped out of an airplane in years and most likely won't ever again, so I don't need it.
My second issue would be the sheaths liner. It worked fine until the sheath got soaking wet and that's when some problems occurred. The gear in the pouch, under compression from the elastic strap flattened the liner. Getting wet caused it to loose it's rigidity and once it compressed re-sheathing required visual alignment. The related issue was that the liner is absorbent and took about three hours to dry in the sun light.
Solution: Change the liner material to plastic/Kydex
Last issue is somewhat trivial but worth mentioning and regards the gear pouch retention strap. One inch of opening is uncovered and it's possible that some items in the pouch could be vulnerable to falling out.
Solution: A full coverage flap.
That's it.

Kinda hard to compare the spec ops survival sheath has a flap and a zipper body that strecthes which in turn made the survival sheath hold large quantity of gear and the price of the material is what caused the Discontinue of the survival sheath....:D
