what are your thoughts of the Gelbu Special?

It's my favorite of all the slim-bladed styles. Mine is comparable in weight to a kobra. I put a scary edge on it and it goes through oregon grape and blackberry canes like a light-saber.

how does it compare to the sirupati?

Personally, it's pretty good deep fried with lots of onions and ketchup. Though I have heard that soaking in barbeque sauce does a lot for the toughness and texture.....:D

I think a GS should be a bit lighter than a sirupati of the same length. In reality I think it varies with the individual blade. I've handled a few of each style and the entire feel of each blade is different depending on which kami made it and what his mood was that day.

I hate these "what do you think about x?" conversations because they inevitably lead to me purchasing said item. :)

Yeah, you're right. My response was, "what do I think of 'em? I think I'd like one"

You mean you DON'T have a Gelbu Special?!?

Man, oh man.

I'll wait until the stuff on its way to me gets here before I order anything else. Once again, I saved up some money for an Everest Katana; once again, I blew it on other stuff.

On that note, I ordered an "antique" khuk and some kardas/chakmas from AC recently. I checked on the order today, saw EXEMPT, and investigated - it seems that my package is held up in Seattle on account of a train derailment.

I immediately thought of two things:

1. I hope nobody got hurt.
2. It's a good thing I wasn't ordering glassware.

Yup. The "Pen Knife" thread the other day led to the same for... somebody 'round here. Luckily I have one- just want to etch it.

I've hear of planting the seed of doubt in someone's mind... this must be a similar deal.

"Of COURSE I need a Gelbu Special. What the HAL was I thinking? It's the perfect khuk for... " then you fill in some task that probably in all likelyhood could be done by your sirupati, kobra, etc.

Unless you already HAVE a GS. Then you're doing the happy-khuk, told-you-so dance....

Posting pictures is an insidious way of aggravating HIKV. Right Steve? :D

One little (fill in the blank with...sip, hit, snort, khukuri) won't hurt you!

We're all khukuri enablers.

Steve

@Ferguson,

What did you use on those handles to make them look like that?!

I missed out on a GS last week so I got a Malla instead, I think I still need a GS...

If I knew I was getting into a khukuri fight, it would be my 18" (17oz) Bura GS. On the light side, but man what a good/mean feel. I suspect it would do good for brush clearing or similar light chopping, but it doesn't seem to be what the blade wants...

I need a 21" version...

18 or 21 " Gelbu Special is the #1 HI product in my opinion.
If you had to choose just one, go with it.

Argg! wish I hadnt opened this thread - you fellas make it hard to save some money...

Personally i think the 18" chitlangi or gelbu special would make the ultimate khukuri.
