I'm just curious on what this groups opinion is on these axes.

What axe would you choose and why.

Gransfors Bruks Forest Axe - 25" handle, 2 lb head,

Best Made Hudson Bay - 26.5" handle, 2 lb head

S.A. Wetterlings Scandinavian Forest Axe - 26" handle, 1 lb 13.9 oz head

Husqvarna Forest Axe - 1.9 Lb head, 26" Handle

The Best Made is just a rebranded Council Tool Velvicut Hudson bay. It is a good axe.

The GB is great. They are pricey, but they do perform well.

Wetterlings is similar to GB but with much more quality fluctuations. Their bit profile is a little more oriented toward splitting than the GB's.

Wetterlings offers more material to work with on the face of the axe. The first 1/4 to 3/4 inch edge has more to do with whether the axe is for splitting or cross grain penetration. I have the 26" wetterlings and I consider it a pretty nice axe, and I don't like many production axes.

I sent my first Best Made back and the replacement is damn near perfect in every way.

I prefer it to my friends GBFA

Only handle one Wetterlings and was ill impressed

Never held one, but the Husky's seem like the best bang for the buck. One is on my list.

Brett, I don't know having not used all on your list. I do own a Husqvarna hatchet and what would be a boys axe. I am not sure who made mine. The hatchet is crap. The boys axe is nice. And it is over 2 pounds BTW.
CB-R If you don't mind me asking why did you send the Best Made back? The thoughts of a boys axe to FSS sounded appealing but it is just to risky if they can't punch a straight eye.

Poor alignment mostly, and not so great grain orientation. Nick, on here, is a rep. of some kind for them and it worked out that he was actually in NY at the right time and hand selected my replacement. In hind sight, the original was not bad at all. I just felt that for the money I should be completely satisfied, which I am.
