The wife has suggested I get a new knife!

My limit is $100, but what to get? Decisions, decisions...

Here is my Becker family in its current form(sorry for the piss poor pic)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

With what I already have, what would you guys suggest for my next Becker? Seeing as I love the feel and finish of the 17, maybe a 15 or 16(I do have the Esee 4) or do I get another full size? Does the Machax have the new finish or is it finished like the older Beckers?

Thanks for any help!

~Joe

There is a heck of a gap between the BK9 and that Bk2..

A BK5 or BK7 would be great..

Also a Machaxe on the top end to see how that curved blade compares to the BK9 as a chopper.

I think you'd enjoy the heck out of a BK5..;)

Just keep it away from the wife. She'll want to steal it for the kitchen:D

Yeah i would go with the bk4 as well...unless you order the roll stamped one from Kabar direct, you will have the new coating...as far as i know, the old coating only comes on the LE bk4....but you know, if you sweet talk the wife for just a little more limit, you could pick up two tweeners! One of them has to be a 15, i love mine man, its weird too because I'm not the biggest fan of the 5..as a kitchen knife its damn near second to none.....

You know you want one :)

I say 15. Since it makes a great kitchen knife I've found it along with my edc to be the 2 most used of my collection.

BK-5. After last week's camping trip, I am absolutely in love with the 5 as a camp knife. It's a perfect all-around knife for the out-of-doors. Light enough to carry all day, but its longer blade means that you can use different sections of the blade for different tasks, thus keeping the edge sharper, longer than a shorter blade would allow. A shorter knife means that you are using the same edge over and over again, which dulls the edge more dramatically. I find myself sharpening my Eskabar three times as often as I have to sharpen the longer blades, which is a nice feature of the long blade I had never really considered before.

While working with the Snakeskin 5 last week, I use the point to cut open packages of food and gear, the tip section to cut meat and veggies, the middle section to whittle wooden "knives" that a bunch of little boys wanted me to carve for them, and the heel of the blade was reserved for fuzz sticks and other fine chores. It works great. The edge of the long blade doesn't dull as much this way, and is easy to bring back up with a strop because no one part of the blade was overused and dulled way down.

I love it.

Well it looks like I may be picking up the machax and thanks to a little creative negotiating, a worksharp sharpener! :)

The 5 is cool, but rather "magnum" :) and Ill definitely be getting a 15 later(the wife wants it for the kitchen). My wife likes the look of the 7, but for whatever reason I cannot justify it. It's too large to be really nimble, but it's also not big enough to compete with the 9 for larger tasks. One could argue it's the knife to cover everything, but I already bring multiple knives with me so it seems a little too redundant. So, I'll take the machax and see how she compares to the 9. Who knows, I may like it better! :)

A Machax and a Work Sharp is a score!

BTW, make sure you use inexpensive beater knives to practice your Work Sharp skills, as well as read the thread on them in the maintenance forum. There is a learning curve, and you can oops a knife if you're not careful, especially the point. But once you get a little practice under your belt, it works amazingly well.

Well, since your wife is so nice, i say get her a BK15 or a BK5, let her pick it out, gotta take care of the one that lets you & encourages you to buy knives !!!
