I'm ordering belts for my 1x30 to start puttting convex edges on my new blade. I'm ordering from lee valley in my cart I have a 400 a 1400 and a 2000 I already have some Norton 220 belts at the house. Question. Would it be ok to skip 800 grit?
Next question if I have a 2000 grit belt is a leather belt with green cmpnd really necessary as it would double the cost of my order. And if anyone knows of a better source for fine sharpening belts for a 1x30 let me know.
Thanks yall

The answers are varied on skipping or adding grits, the sundry benefits of toothy or perfectly apexed edges.

Depends on what finish you want, how much grinding you're going to do etc.

IF i use my belt sander for sharpening any more. I mostly use stones now. I use a x45 norax belt which is around 600 grit i think, to both put the bevel on and sharpen followed by a leather belt with green compound. I can shave my face dry with just these 2 belts in about 45-60 seconds of sharpening at MOST.

trugrit.com or supergrit.com are both going to be cheaper than leevalley for belts. A leather belt will last practically forever for sharpening while the 2000 grit belts will wear out very very fast on that 1x30 unless you can slow it down some so even though the leather seems expensive at first it is actually the much better value. IMHO anything finer than 400grit on a fixed speed machine is pretty worthless.

When I sharpen with the grinder (for finr work I always use stones) I normally use 600gt trizac belts on my 1x30 then go to the buffing wheel (or leather wheel) gives a good shaving sharp edge with some bite that is a good utility edge.
But it all depends on what you personally like your edges to look like.
Tru-grit is a great company to deal with and have a good selection and great customer service.

Get the leather belt. I have a 1*30 that I use almost exclusively with a leather belt for sharpening. After I put the edge on a few passes on the leather belt and it is crazy sharp....

Same here. I have a 1x30 that is only used with a leather belt and green compound. I use it for really polishing an edge and also for just knocking the burr off to leave it toothy depending on the edge I'm looking for.

i use a 320 belt, then a well used 800 trizac. then i have a few worn out softer belts, I flip them over and use the backside. black compound first. then another soft belt with green compound. Wicked sharp and shiny mirror edge.
