Well the title pretty much says it all, what do you think is the best blade shape for a edc folder? I am trying to find the perfect folder and am slowly putting it together. Thanks!

Ryan

I like the Warncliffe sytle or modified Warncliffe as an EDC. Not to everyones liking though.

I concur... a clip point or drop point is pretty sweet... but I find myself hurting for Wharncliffe in the worst way in my knife collection.

My preference in order is Drop, Wharnclif, Clip, Spear. I'll avoid a knife if it has a Tanto blade.

I've carried a spear point but it wasn't as useful as a good clip blade. At least it wasn't on the M-16-03Z. Spear on an SAK cuts better. Never carried a Tanto. I'd like to get a wharncliffe, it looks like a good compromise between clip and sheepsfoot. I find a little stockman really handy but if I had to have only one blade it would be a clip point. YMMV

I like the reverse tanto blade on my BM 942. It has an adequate belly for slicing/cutting and a strong point for piercing. The knife is also ideal (for me) in size and weight for EDC.

What would you be using your EDC for? My wharncliffe-bladed folder outcuts the rest of my folders for my EDC uses (read: opening large sack of Meow Mix or kitty litter or plastic coverings), but it's a Benchmade 921 with a really thin blade.

I guess it depends a lot on what you are using it for. I have been using a Camillus EDC at work for a while now, opening boxes, making displays out of boxes, etc. It has worked really well, the slight recurve has been very helpful. In general though, I think that any blade shape with a nice belly is good for EDC tasks. Don't really think much of the tanto at all, seems to me that for most uses it wasts a portion of usable blade.

I have two folders that I switch between as my edc's. One is a clip point and to me this is the best all around blade shape. The blade is fairly thick and it does not have a high grind so as a slicer it is not the best pick, but as a sticker and general cutting it does a good job. The extra thickness does give it some lateral strength thinner knives may not possesss. The other knife has a high grind, slightly dropped point recurved blade and is a great slicer. It also serves as a good everyday carry and user. Of the two though the clip point is my favorite blade shape. I do have a high grind spearpoint coming in the next few weeks and suspect it will also be an ideal user.

Bottom line? 1. Clip point
2. Spear point
3. Drop point

Benchmade Modifed drop point!
Clip Point
(those are my favs)
Every other style expect Tanto is good as well for an EDC.

Pictures speak so much louder than words. There two knives have the best EDC shaped blades I've had the pleasure of carrying. I like a nice thin edge a good pointy tip.

I think a drop point does it for me. Thanks alot guys for all your help! Now just to figure out the perfect steel lol. Thanks again!

For my EDC I prefer either a drop point, clip point, or a recurve blade. More important to me is a nice thin edge which is why the Opinel is king!

I'm a big fan of recurves. I think the combination of belly and inward curve is more flexible than any other blade shape.

I like both drop-points and clip-points as long as they have a resonably fine tip. On broader blades I tend to prefer a clip and on narrower blades a drop.

Is a recurve harder to sharpen? Also Jazzman do you have any information or a picture of the Opinel? Thanks!

Ryan

I don't have any problems sharpening a recurve on the sharpmaker. It is a different story if you are using a benchstone, or Lansky system though. You really just need something smaller in diameter than the recurve, so that it will fit in to sharpen all of the parts.

Currently my EDC is a Strider Buck SB2 mini. Spearpoint blade, very robust and practically indestructible. Very rough scales and clip though and wears on the pants:mad: I switched to it from my Emerson CQC-7. I found little utility in a Tanto blade. Looks menacing though. When I'm in my suit or dress clothes (i.e. a night on the town, etc) I carry my Benchmade 941s Pre-production in modified clip point, which I like very much. I don't want to abuse it so that's why is sits around waiting for those "dressing up and going out times." I'm waiting on an Axis 5000, a Spyderco Military, and an MOD Watson Trident as we speak.:D
