I should refer you to Prac Tac. But I think you put your hand between the twine and the handle as you grip the knife. The twine is supposed to help prevent you from losing your grip on the knife. The gouges would help hold the twine in place.

So it Does look like there are holes the string is threaded through Underneath the handle?'ok, good I thought I was just seeing things
