What Buck might I have?

A friend gave this to me about 20 years ago and it's sat in my toolbox ever since.
Any idea what it might be, and if the blade looked like this originally (or "shrank" due to sharpenings)?
The only mark on the blade is the "Buck USA" on the (?)ricasso.

rob, welcome. I agree, it's a 118. It doesn't look like it's been sharpened down. The blade is of 440C and should be 4 1/2" long. Did you get the original sheath? DM

It sure looks like one!
The blade is 4 7/16" long; below is a picture of the sheath it was given to me in.
"Buck" is embossed in the leather and stamped in the metal snap.

rob, reread your post.
Then look on the back of the sheath for any other stamping...
DM

Not sure what you're getting at ("reread your post" part), but there are no markings on the back of the sheath, just a belt loop.

"it was given to me in." I'm sure it's just me but I had to reread this line several times. As I thought you were about to type a date. DM

Ahhh, simplified grammar on my part.
"Below is the sheath the knife was given to me in"

And punctuation can kill: "Let's eat, Grandma" vs. "Let's eat Grandma" :)

Anyway, does that look like the original sheath, and does this knife have any value, or is it OK to remain a toolbox queen?

Yes, it looks to be the original sheath and it does have value. I just can't say because of Forum rules. DM

Must have been a good friend. Nice knife.

Haebbie, that is a real nice collection!

OK, wasn't looking for A value, just the fact that it has value beyond being a toolbox queen.

He is indeed a good friend. At on point in time he sold me a Japanese officer's sword from WWII that I've been told is fairly valuable.
In fact, as I was leaving his "rummage sale" with it, I was offered 3x what I paid for it, JUST FOR THE HANDLE(Tsuka).

He's the type who loves giving things to people that have an appreciation for them.

Well, Rob, your 118 is not a toolbox queen. But also not a safe queen.
I paid for my two two line stamped 118s a lot less than 100 USD each.
You may send the knife to Buck for a SPA treatment for a few Dollar.
That will increase the value notable. Or you use the knife. It is a good
user, just because of the 440C steel.

The sheath looks correct to me for the knife. Yes, there are some of them out
there without a number on the backside. But also the stamp may be worn
out and is badly visible. the imprinting is mostly below the belt loop, but
some ot this sheath have it above. and a few number has it just behind the
Loop. This sheath was also used for the 103 skinner for a time.

No other markings on the sheath anywhere (and it's not used enough that they would have worn off).
Well, I think it'll go off for a spa treatment and get put away for my son to inherit some day since I don't really have any regular use for it (I don't hunt, and I sold my motorcycles :-)

Thanks, gang!

Looks like a Buck Personal. Very useful knife. I don't care for the old 440C though; I wore out a few carborundum stones as well as the blades, trying to sharpen my Bucks from that era.
