This may not fit in this forum but could someone recommend me a good camera in the 2-300 dollar range for taking pics of my survival gear and
nature hikes to post here? Mine is fine for most landscapes but anything within 4 feet is blurry and just not nice to look at.

Hey Liam...

Digital or film ??

Dell.ca just had some decent deals on digitals...

Bought a couple of 7 mpl from there,, pretty good deal...
They are Kodaks...

For pictures on the web there no point going to a really high Mpl.. The files will be so frigging huge..
I like my web pictures to be anywhere from 50-70,000 K and no more...
Some of the files can go into the 1-5 mb range..Far too large...

I just picked up a Panasonic FX10 for $189.99.
6mp.
Digital Image Stabilizer.
steel body/outer.

This shot was taken without a flash and using some very poor lighting.

I'll try to get a better macro pic later.

I'm with bishop. You need to check what type of settings are available on the cameras you are looking at and see what distance they are good for. My wife and i have bought Cannons with good experienceswe are on our third camera and not because they broke but rather to upgrade. She has a delphi 300 or something close in her purse at all times "just in case" its about the size of a pack of cigarrets ,maybe smaller. Take nice photos. What ever you get make sure you get an aftermarket memory card which will hold more photos.

That reminds me.
The FX10 I just bought uses the new SD/HC cards. With an 8G I can store up to 3,000 photos at 6mp.

Yes, I said 3,000 :D

I love my Sony DSC S600 with a 1G Card small, convenient, idiot proof and semi indestructible, I drop it all the time.

Here you go Liam, research all you want. This is a good site with reliable info.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

www.dpreview.com is terrific.

Take a look also at www.cnet.com and http://www.steves-digicams.com.

And the user reviews at www.amazon.com can be helpful as well.

Remember that whatever digital camera you buy is
going to be replaced in about a year or so by one less expensive, with
more features, so don't drive yourself overly crazy with the shopping...

I would go with a Cannon anything, if you are getting a point and shoot, as said before dpreview.com is a great site, as is kenrockwell.com for reviews.

I have a Canon SD600, I love it. I also considered the SD630. Both have great macro control, and in manual mode you can make them do just about anything you want (just like an SLR). They are also very fast. That was my main reason for getting the 600. The SONYs are good too.

I use a panasonic DMC-fz20, which is old hat now, but it takes some pretty good photos and can probably be had new for around what you are looking to spend. My wife picked up a small Canon and it takes beautiful photos, but lacks the stabilization and super zoom lense that my panasonic uses.

gkruty, I like that they are fast, I hate waiting 2 or 3 seconds after the button is pressed, espically when trying to take action shots or friends are posing. Bestbuy seems to have the best selection and prices. I have always heard canon was the best in the business, so I may as well go with one of theirs.

Fast was my most important factor. My last was a Sony, and it was quick, when I went shopping, I clicked every camara I could find. The newer Cannons are very fast! As fast if not faster then the sonys. I take alot of pictures of my dog, he can't be still for a second. It works great.

In the woods, it takes AWESOME low light pictures.

It takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you know the menu set-up, you can make this camera (Mine is the SD600) do just about anything you want.

It has a 4X OPTICAL zoom plus 10X digital zoom. Optical Zoom is important to keep picture quality high, digital zoom losses quality quickly.

Good Luck with whatever you choose!
