clean up the blade on a 110? Picked up a 5th Version, 3rd variation the other day and the blade has a lot of scratches, scuffing, etc. What can I use to get it back a little closer to factory fresh or at least a uniform appearance? TIA

Bad, I have used 400 grit wet/dry paper with pretty good results...I tend to use pieces left over from previous work. it's tedious and you have to be very careful to keep your lines straight and perpendicular to the spine...
I would love to know what wheel ie: stainless wire or nylox etc. that would make it go quicker...

I use the edge of a 6" flap sander on a grinder. I have a 240 grit and 340? grit. I think it works pretty good.

Check out the knife I'll post tomorrow morning in the SPS. It's a micarta 112 that I took before and after pictures.

Ooops....you posted just before me. I have been getting really good results with a 6" flap sander. I can have a blade looking like new in five minutes. Check out the SPS tomorrow and maybe this will work for you if you like how a micarta 112 turned out that I'll post before and after pictures tomorrow.

I use a gray scotch brite 6" wheel, or you can use tyco.
This is what I use as well. They are expensive, but work great. Buck uses tyco wheels for this I am quite sure

If you ever get a chance to pick up the Buck Knives Video with the factory tour, it shows a 110 being built and rebuilt.

You may want to start with Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish. Apply with a Q-tip or rag, buff it a few seconds, and wipe off. I have given many knives new life with it. It will not remove deep scratches, but you will see a big improvement. Its very gentle but does the trick.

Ignore the knives - just showing the Mother's.

How deep are the scratches? Pics would help.

I'll try and post a pic later today, this evening. Mostly it looks like scratches from letting other parts of the blade, other then the edge come into contact with a whet stone.

Someone used an engraver to put initials and some kind of three digit # on the rear bolsters but that's pretty deep so I figured I'd leave them alone. Character isn't a bad thing but I did want to try and clean up the blade if for no other reason then just to see how it would look.

This is the second 5th Version I've picked up recently. Really like the feel and looks of the 110's from this and earlier eras fore than the rounded ones that came later and continue today. Love them all but the earlier ones are really catching my fancy at the moment.

Hi Guys,

does one of you knows what kind of Scotch brite wheel Buck uses for finishing the
knife blades (and would tell it to me)?

Best,
Haebbie

P.S.: Scotch brite wheels are hard to find in Germany.
I've to order them overseas :(.

I believe they use a very fine Tyco wheel. You can also use a Scotch brite (gray/ very fine) wheel with the same out come.
