Looks like I'm picking up a NIB Basic 7 soon (Thanks Max )!!! I've tried doing a search, but haven't had much luck in finding ANY info about M-INFI.

What can you Hogs tell me about this stuff. I understand it was a more budget friendly steel/heat treat process, but I can't find any performance reports or feedback aside from Noss's D-test of a Basic 9 (which the B9 did pretty well and the video's were fun to watch).

Obviously the steel is tough, but where would you rate the edge holding capabilities for regular slicing duties in comparison to INFI and SR-101?

As soon as I can pick up my NIB 2nd Gen Glock and after the B-7 arrives, I'll take some pics of the new combo. Just looking for info while I wait.

as always......THANKS!!!

A mystery:D cliff stamp did stated something very long time a go.
Any response you get watch out for the mystery:yawn:

I did a review of a Basic 9 doing some chopping of fairly large "fire logs" a week or so back ....the asymetrical grind stood up to the task really well and a couple of strokes on the V grind side with a fine ceramic stone on my Sharpmaker set on the 30 degree back bevel setting ( as the V grind side is quite high ) had it back to razor sharp ....then stropped the convex twice on a leather paddle with green chrome and it was "hair poppin" sharp.

The ASM edge IMO makes "the knife" in the Basic's .... if you are going into the Hills for "weeks" that Basic 7 you have will be the easiest knife to sharpen in the field you own .... bar none .... I take an Eze Lap Model M Diamond Sharpener to work as a steel and smooth out any "dinks" from chopping .... it is a very robust brass job .... one where the steel screws back into the handle .... and I take one each of the Sharpmaker rods .... a fine and coarse .... in about 3 mins at the end of the day I can have my Basic 9 as sharp as when I left .... and M Infi takes a true "hair poppin" edge .... I can't tell any difference between it and Infi ... and I have really "looked" ... and with the ASM Grind it might eclipse other Infi knives on slicing ....

Test wise .... when Jerry did the Busse challenge of cutting a few thousand pieces of hemp rope at Blade he used a Basic 9 .... so did Jennifer when she did the free hanging rope cut on thick hemp manilla .... then the Basic 9 was tested by a guy against a Cold Steel Trail Master on cutting ... it won easily with the paraphrased assessment ... "the Basic 9 seems to almost sharpen itself with the combination of convex edge on one side and V grind on the other" ....

M-Infi has "won" Busse more "titles" than Infi as far as I know in terms of the "records" which count .... mainly the Blade Challenge which no other knife maker has taken up ....

And ... it may be just me .... but I also think some of the older stuff done by Jerry himself just has to be more "valuable" .... and I think Jerry did most of the Basic's ... back then he was mainly on his own I think ... but some of the more knowledgeable guys can chime in if not ....

Personally I would like to see a return of the ASM Grind as an "option" .... I want a NMFBM with one and a RMD done the same .... or a SYKCO version of the Basic 5 in Infi with a larger tang and Dogfather grip .... those Basic 5's are just a little tight on my hands .... the Basic 7 tho has the larger grip which works great ....

Good stuff.
Testing showed regular infi was a bit better, i was told...but using both i find it hard to tell much difference. Both fine. And i love the handle on the Basics.

ALL Great info! Thanks:thumbup:

Any other users?

Any other mystery's behind the steel? What it is...what it isn't, etc.

PICS????

I'm heavily leaning towards Res-C as the "BEST for ME" handle material. When I got my first Camp Tramp a couple months ago, I've fallen out of lust with the micarta and G-10 handles and have only purchased knives with Res-C grips since.

Thanks Again,

Stump

I've always seen the difference between M-INFI and INFI the same way I look at 0.001% THD verses 0.0005% THD. I don't have any way to measure it.

LOL, Here's some M-INFI / Res-C

As the boss would say.....YOWZA!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

Awesome collection!!! Thanks for the pic...it helps ease the waiting pains!!!

Stump,

The Basic 7 is a great knife, and I think you will enjoy it. If I remember correctly, M-INFI has essentially the same chemical formula as INFI except M-INFI does not have cobalt in it (a search should turn up some info on this). I vaguely remember "papathud", a long-time member here, saying he saw no significant difference in the performance of M-INFI vs. INFI. The Res-C grips are great, and I feel the Basic series are probably the most underrated Busse knives.

You mean Mystical-Infi.... Mere mention of it makes people go back and resurrect 6 year old threads....

:D

Nice Links Papathud  .... there is definately something special in cutting performance with the ASM Grind .... I love my Basic 9 and my hope one day is to find a SHBM with slotted bolts and an ASM Grind .... oh .... and be able to afford it .... :D
