What can you tell me about the 703?

I've had this knife for years and used to alternate it with a Case Copperlock as one of my favorite edc knives. I don't really know anything about the knife in terms of how it relates to the Buck lineup. The tang is stamped 703U USA. I assume it is 420HC. I believe it has been discontinued. From a quality standpoint how does this compare to other Buck knives and how does it relate to current production models?

Thanks for your help.

CGM, Yours is a 1998 mfg. and yes 420 steel . However, the 700 series is discontinued the 704 in 1999, 701 in 2001 and 2002 for the 703 . It was a great series, a upgrade of the 300 series . So, yours is worth more as none are being made . Its still a good Buck, made in USA knife and a upgrade . Hang on to it and enjoy your piece of history . DM

Thanks much for the information. You answered my questions, even the ones I didn't exactly ask. I was curious how it compared to the 300 series. I like the knife and like I said above it was a frequent edc for a long time. I especially found myself using the sheepsfoot blade a lot.

I guess you would call the 703 a mini stockman. It's a good/versatile design. I was thinking about getting a larger version such as the 301. Now maybe I'll keep my eyes open and see if I can find a 701 offered for sale somewhere.

Thanks again for the help.

CGM, Your welcome . I've seen some offered on the bay . The earlier (you probably already know) year dates are of 425 steel, those stamped in old English script used 440C blade steel, both upgrade steels . This series is fraught w/ upgrades, bone handles, stag handles, Mother of pearl, Mastodon Ivory, even damascus blades were offer at one time . This entire series was offered w/ excellant blade etchings as well . DM

With all of those positives it's too bad the series was discontinued. Just a business decision, I guess.
