I'm a rookie at knife making and am unsure what type knife this would be considered! I forged it this past weekend, and it was to be a bowie! But I think the point is a bit high for a bowie, or is it?

A fighter, Bowie, camp knife ???

So if I go with this design what would you call it? Help me out!

11 3/4 OAL 6 3/4 blade farriers rasp.

that would be sweet for in the kitchen:thumbup:

kitchen knife I guess wasn't the intent, but it looks like a good cutter for on the board:thumbup:.

Why did you design it the way you did?

Looks kind of slashy/stabby so 'fighter' I guess would be the designation I'd give it, if I were to generalize.
But I really don't like those broad, generic terms- it's just too, well, broad and generic.
I do like acronym's, like Will Leavitt's "EDK"- Every Day Knife, or his "GOD"- Golok Of Doom. But what I really, really like is a descriptive name, like Will's "Lemon Cutter", or Bob Loveless' "Wilderness". Leaves a little mystery and intrigue imo.

Lorien, I actually tried for a classic Bowie and tried to forge the point lower but with my inexperience couldent seem to get it right. So I left it as you see it, just kinda happened!

I may try tweaking it more!

Thanks for the input! Any recommendations are welcome.

well, then I'd make it nice and thin, grind it high and start using it in the kitchen. Call it a test blade, since it didn't really turn out how you wanted it from the get go, and go ahead and make the bowie you wanted to make.

I'll make sure your final bowie effort ends up in my Best Bowies 2011 folder:thumbup:

Steve,
Why not throw it in the forge and whack it with a wooden mallet to bring the point down?

If.... it's kind of thick... then it would be a camp knife.
A fighter and/or Bowie should be thinner and lighter.. IMO...
Also... if you're going to give a good sharpened back edge, then it qualifies as a bowie (at least to me)
But if you're only going to give it a swedge, then you might want to call it a Persian fighter.
......
Judging by the handle, it appears to have more of a camp knife feel to it than a fighter, or Bowie.
A fighter would normally have a thinner handle, and most bowies as well.
....
What this knife is going to really be depends a lot on what we can't see yet.
