What caused slipjoint spring to break?

Just pulled a medium stockman by a US manufacturer out of a box that had been there about 4 years. (Thought I had lost it.) I was overjoyed to find it since it is my favorite pattern and I quickly replaced it. I was ready to put it back in the rotation when I noticed the mainspring for the clip blade was broken about 1/3 the way down from where the main blade pivots!
What causes this?
And, more importantly, is this something that can be fixed? I would like to fix it rather than replace since the manufacturer no longer puts out knives with this handle material. (And yes, I am contacting the manufacturer this week. Just need to get to the camera and take some shots first.)
Thanks

I've never heard of something like that happening before, but if it has, the guys in the Traditional forum would probably have a higher chance of knowing about it than the people here. Pics would definitely help. And why aren't you mentioning the manufacturer of the knife? (I'm guessing Case.)

I've heard of this happening to a UKPK, no abuse or anything, just "snap" and it was broken...

I have a Queen made Schatt and Morgan that did the same thing, a broken spring just sitting there, no obvious reason. Poor QC most likely, spring tempered too hard.

I'm betting the Heat Treat on the spring is off, as it has to be deferentially tempered to have a hard face near the blade and retain the ductility and springiness in the rest.

I had a spring on a Queen sodbuster break as well. Sent mine in and had it back in less than a month in like new condition.

Another one bites the dust. Another Queen. Another broken spring on another stockman.
Wow. The last one came back with the edge ground off (their atttempt at "sharpening") and with a weak pull on all blades.
I'm afraid to send this one off but I do want it repaired since it is one of my favorite pocket knives. Dilema- send it out and get it "repaired" with a weak pull for all blades and a ground down dull edge or have a broken knife.
Now I'm worried about the Dan Burke half whittler I just got...
No more Queen for me for a while. Need to let distributors work through old stock and see if the Daniels family can turn it around before I buy from Queen again.

Sorry to hear, i've always had good luck with their products.

Is there anyway you can send it in with a note saying to leave the edge alone and to focus on the spring?
