What changed in 1986?

Surfing around some and I see sellers making a point of listing Bucks as pre-86.

What happened or changed in '86? Is it a significant issue or just a minor deal?

My guess is that in 1986 they started the date coding system after the model number on the blade.

1986 is when buck started using date codes on the blades. A knife listed as pre-1986 would have no date code.
