ok guys what size and where should i buy it from???? i love checkering, it really does someting for the feel of a knife, you need that thumb stop.
i checked out brownells, they have a good assortment. thanks in advance

for the thumb stop on the spine?
Most guys I know use a single triangle file and do several marks. I would say nothing smaller than 30 LPI, probably more like 25.
it was hard for me, now I wish I got a larger one. 40 LPI is too small to checker G10, at least for the look I want.

Whenever someone mentions a specific LPI for their checkering on the spine, it seems like the number 20 keeps coming up (20 lpi). I use a 1/8" round file for a different approach, but it is really tough to get the lines parallel and squared to the sides of the spine.

For firearms [ haven't done it on knives] 20lpi is the most practical.30 or more is just for decoration. For the metal work on a handgun I use 20 lpi but FLAT topped, that way it's easier on the clothing and just as secure a grip. The checkering file is easier as it gives you uniform spacing easily, even if you just use it for marking to be finished some other way.

sounds good to me. well time to order a file. whats a good place? with good prices? so far i've only dound them at brownells. thanks again guys

Jantz supply has them,
Texas knife supply,
and I think Knife and Gun. maybe.
I think I got mine at jantz for like $26 or so.

Mike i got mine from Brownells...20 lpi,
you seen what it looks like bro...i have used mine for almost 3 yrs,and it still cuts great...
just be sure to clean it up after every use with a wire brush, and it will keep you happy for a long time! :)

roger that ! Usually use tri-file , mark lines beforehand with sharpie and ruler and go slow. My newest project the thumb checks are almost perfect.
With this heat though, itll be a while before I finish it hehehe. :)

Don't get the one I have, it doesn't work worth a poop slinger!!!!!!
I need one with fewer teeth per inch I think. Maybe they make some that cut deeper than others too.
