I know 8Cr13MoV is equivalent to AUS8. But, I was wondering... what Chinese steel is equivalent to AUS10? Does anyone know?

Thank you.

Thanks, for some reason I thought that was equivalent to VG10.
It is. The compositions of VG10 and AUS 10 are fairly similar.

From a field edge retention perspective, I don't notice a field edge retention difference between, VG-10, AUS 10, 154CM / ATS-34, IF they are hardened to the same hardness.
They are all a bit better than 440C.
All are less than fully hardened D2 (at 61 HRC) or S30V.

Hard to make valid comparisons if you do not know the steel hardness of each blade. I used to have access to a Rockwell tester and used to do side by side comparison testing.

VG-10 and AUS10 are made by different Japanese companies and directly compete with each other; I also haven't noticed much difference. I think the main reason for VG-10 taking over probably had more to do with business and marketing than the specs of the product, but I don't know the details of that. Oddly enough, now AUS10 seems to be seeing a resurgence.

10Cr13MoV, according to the standard naming convention.

Add: in both cases they are "roughly" equivalent and not an exact match.

I think it goes by 10Cr15CoMoV from what I've seen, and yes it is an excellent alternative. Really wish manufacturers used it more often; it seems to offer a particularly good value.

It is odd that you rarely see it used. They clearly have an abundance of it. It's one of the main components to most of the mid-grade damascus that comes out of China. Civivi alone produces crazy amounts of 9cr/10cr damascus. They must to have warehouses full of it. You would think it would get used for most of the Chinese kitchen knives that have saturated the market, but they seem to mostly be in VG-10.

Thanks for all the info guys. I did not realize that VG-10 and AUS10 are basically the same steel, but it makes sense. I have lots of Cold Steel in AUS10 and some Spyderco in VG-10.
