What clip is on the 940-1?

Is the clip on the 940-1 a parkerized clip or a black oxide clip? Or are parkerized and black oxide the same thing?
Also what would the stand alone clip be considered? Thanks in advance for any help!

I have heard the term parkerized when looking at threads on the knife, but whatever it is, it seems to be just paint that scratches and chips off with ease. I saw someone put the Contego clip on one and that is what I have been aiming to do as soon as I can track one down.

Mine came with the painted clip last October (2014). I have some Parkerized (a phosphate treatment) clips from Benchmade, but I didn't want to mess with the original one until is is worn. There are threaded inserts visible inside the scales so changing the clip should not affect the carbon fiber, but I don't know how the inserts are retained.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Wavicle: That's odd that your 940-1 came with a black painted clip. I've never seen one in person or in pictures with a black painted one. If you take a look at the picture I posted the orange grip has the black painted. Whereas the 940-1 is a shiny gray. Would you post a picture of your 940-1?

Mine was purchased late summer last year and has the parkerized clip. It wears and fades very smoothly and subtle with age just making it look better IMO.

Yes it has the parkerized clip not the painted one that comes on the older 940 model. As Dantone pointed out it wears and fades very smoothly and subtle while the painted one gets chipped and fugly fast. Think of the way the blued steel on a handgun wears..

Ya know, BM will send you new clips for free. All ya gotta do is call them and ask.

Wouldn't surprise me if they would send you one in every flavor available.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just heard back from Benchmade, the official word is, for them, black oxide and parkerized are the same thing. Internally they refer to the clip as a black oxide clip.

The clip on the 940-1 and the one sitting on top are supposed to be the same. When I sent them the picture they said they'll pull me one that looks more like the original. It was the drastic difference in appearance that made me wonder if black oxide and parkerized were two different things and the fact that I've seen unpainted clips that looked shiny (like the one on the 940-1) and chalky matte (like the one sitting on top).

The painted clips are an abomination. They look like complete crap in no time with all the paint chipping and scratching off. It looks jankety in the pocket while at the office. Their black oxide clips wear much nicer but honestly still a poorly finished clip. It's a small detail but at the price range Benchmade Blue class sell for I'd hope for something finished similar to the black clip on my Para 2 and Manix. I'm guessing it probably has something to do with constantly sending out free clips all the time. Got to keep the cost down lol.

To me, BKC clips are like tiers on your sports car. When it wears down, change it. May be except older models with non standardized clip, like my Onslaught 741. :(

Painted clips have always bugged me. Showing wear in the first few outings, the material actually appears to be soft. Recently received a few of their black oxide versions, and when bending one it snapped in half. This has never happened before; bad heat treating? If keeping the cost down, I hope this isn't a permanent move. Maybe a different supplier? Hope it's just a bad batch.

I would not want Benchmade tires then. Since tires are the only part of the car that actually touches the ground that is the last place you want to skimp out lol.

Keeping with the car theme I would say the Benchmade clips are like the plasticky interior of a Corvette vs the more refined interior of a Porsche. While it may have no effect on the driveabilty of the car it still adds to the overall package.

Sorry for the late reply- I never looked back at this thread. Here's my October 2014 940-1 with painted clip. I've compared it with several other Benchmades and can say 100% it's painted. I also have Parkerized clips from Benchmade and they look & feel a whole lot different.

By contrast, here is a black oxide / Parkerized clip on an REI Griptilian:

A Parkerized finish is not the same thing as the painted finish on a clip.
Paint is just paint, the other involves chemically altering the surface of the item. Think of when they mention "gun bluing".
Tracking down a clip should be no problem. Call Benchmade and ask them to send you one.

That's weird. You're 940-1 has a painted clip, but black oxide screws. Did you buy it from the factory/authorized dealer or from an individual? Mine has the "Benchmade USA" black oxide clip, like all the rest I've seen in person and photos (besides yours). Nice clear photos BTW!

Well, that makes me a bit suspicious. It was purchased from Amazon and the seller was " Gear Up USA". From what I can tell they only sell through Amazon and say nothing about being an authorized dealer (the suspicious part).

It came packaged like all my other Benchmade units (about a dozen) so I did not even think to research the specs for all components.

Crap. I had no idea. Guess I need to call the factory and ask what's up and get the correct clip.

I appreciate you noticing this and bringing it to my attention!

Photos are simple iPhone 5s shots with good outdoor lighting.

Update: Talked to Benchmade Customer Service and they are sending out the correct black oxide clip and a deep carry one. No explanation how that painted one landed on my 940-1. My 940 has a painted clip as does my 943.

I got mine supposedly new from a guy on Benchmade forums. It's definitely an ugly painted clip, looking forward to upgrading one of these days.
