What Collaboration Knives Made You Want the Custom?

Yesterday I was checking out www.knifeart.com and I saw aq Joe Pardue flipper folder that looks just like his new line of factory knives. Frankly I always thought that design was ungainly until I picked up the production version at a gun show in September. After I tightened the pivot, the knife locked up like vault and the flipper is as fast as an assisted opener. To make a long story short, when I can afford it, I'm getting a custom Pardue flipper.

The other production knife that made want the custom was the Spyderco Starmate, it caused me the pick up a real Terzoula when I saw one. Not surprisingly, the Spyderco compared very favorably to the real thing. Anybody else pick up a custom based on the factory version?

Buck/Mayo without a doubt. Buck production is a fine knife in its own right I had one, but have since sold it. I had accuired my first Mayo medium recurve, and compared the two.....I thought the buck version was a hell of a knife for the price, and I think it still is. There is a BIG differance between the real thing and the collaboration, fit finish is second to none, and I think anyone that has held a Mayo will testify to that. One bad thing tho................Im hooked.

Kershaw Ken Onions.

As good as these are, the real Onions sound so awesome.

I handled a Buck/Strider folder in a knife shop and ordered a Strider GB the next day. Had it over a year now and I haven't bought a new knife since. It has really spoiled me.

The Spyderco small Centofante (C25), which is still one of my favorite production knives. I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a folder from Mr. Centofante at last year's Blade Show.

I also own a Spyderco Starmate and agree with Anthony. Owning one makes you want a handmade Terzoula folder.

I have a Spydie Chinese Folder, and I would love to pick up a large custom Bob Lum Chinese Folder. Maybe someday. :)

Emerson Commander...the Commander was one of the first "good" knives that I bought years ago before I had ever seen a custom knife in the steel...now that I have realized the huge difference between customs and production, I would never buy a production collab again...man I want an Emerson custom (Commander or otherwise) :(

Actually, the Spyderco version of the Lum Chinese folder is an example of a collab that DOESN'T make me want the "real" thing. The Spyderco version is PERFECT in every way. Bob Lum himself couldn't improve upon it.

Spyderco hit that one out of the stadium. :)

CRKT Polkowski Companion. I love the ergos on this knife, but the AUS6 is less than favorable.

Howard Viele, Robert Terzuola,
and plenty of others, but those are tops.
Too bad most of Viele's customs are bead-blasted.
:barf: Yucky.

The Ontario/Bagwell Hell's Belle, VS: The Bill Bagwell Hell's Belle...I'd LOVE to own an original.

CRKT Crawford Kasper Folder. I was a total knife newbie and once I got over the idea that someone could spend almost $40!!! on a knife, I liked it so well it made me wonder, "Who is this Crawford guy?"

I know who he is now.

You hit the nail on the head there, I have a Spyderco Chinese Lum and have met Bob and looked at his version and I while his work is top notch Spyderco's version was made just as well I thought, nice job Spydie!

Buck-Strider large tanto. I bought one of these and loved it. I ordered a GB a few weeks later. The GB is a great, but I can't really get into it. The GB is flying the desk right now, and I've got another SB-1 on order.

I can second that. I have owned two of the Camillus EDCs which where just a shade too small. Since then, I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to get a DDR 3.5" carbon fiber handle EDC for the last 1.5 years... Pity Darrel doesnt make them anymore.

DDR EDC.

I'd like a Lum custom one day, after owning his Spyderco's.

With Mayo, I went the other way. The custom first then the Buck.

Camullus Minitalon -> Simonich
Camullus EDC -> Ralph EDC (if the Camillus version was bigger I would never buy the custom piece).

PS: I could not find Joe Pardue flipper folder on that site :(
