Just uploaded photobucket on my new work iPad and had to play with it. Much easier to upload photos using iPad than my slr camera. Anyway question stands what is the name Jerry called the
Desert snakeskin looking slabs on the desert NARK. Plus I am fishing for compliments because those two are my favoritist pair of jerrydom that I own.

Just went through my old stuff and remembered how much rope cut old school snakeskin is better than anything they make now. If we can recreate dinosaurs from fossilized mosquitoes we should be able to get real snakeskin again. Rope cut please!

We can't, so that does not bode well for the snakeskin.

Strictly speaking, that's an ARK, not a NARK. I think the handles are green linen micarta.

Thanks. I thought the serrations made it a NARK. Is that wrong? I got them a long time ago and my record keeping skills are lacking. Green linen micarta. Now that I look closer I can see that. Thanks again.

Edited: Belay my question, I looked up NARK, it is no NARK. I stand corrected.

Definately a Desert ARK. 1 of 6?
Also pretty sure I've heard (read here somewhere, maybe from The Bully?) that this specific variation of GL is/was referred to as "green linen snakeskin micarta". My desert tan CS Satin Jacks, another very limited 'run' also have these.
Dam phone... ETA: I'm another fan of 'em as well as a sterile snakeskin/black version being my very first Busse. (Ah, what a long slippery slope...!) The Desert ARK is a grail for me, so congrats on that one, brother! :)

Yes it is a beautiful combo. I almost wish it had a defect so that I could bang around with it. Alas it does not so it sits there looking pretty! I did not know it was 1 of 6 six though. That pretty much guarantees that I won't use it ever. SOB it is then. Kind of want to wait for the CG SOB though and get two of them. Thanks for the information.

The Desert ARK on the left has Green linen micarta handles. The older stuff was so nice, it had very noticeable layers, almost black in between the green. The newer green linen was less dramatic but still my favorite handle material. :)

The ARK on the right is the aforementioned Snakeskin micarta. I had one, serious regrets letting it go.

EDIT: to add that I've never heard the older green linen referred to as snakeskin by the shop, but it has been mistaken as such by others because of the dramatic layers in it. I have a set of SFNO scales in the old green linen. :) I also have a set of scales of the EDC handles that are newer and much less dramatic but oh so nice to the touch.

Those spots on the desert ARK are actually discolorations in the coating opposite the serrations. First time I handled it I wondered how that exactly would happen. Alas I do not know. The old school micarta is just what leatherman described. Great to the touch and the layers just pop out at you visually. I really wish this could be recreated.

Search Fu. ;)

I thought I'd pull out my snakeskin handles and snap a quick pic. As you can see the different handles show the snakeskin colors differently. I personally like the rope cut snakeskin handles the best. (the bottom is green snakeskin)

ETA:, the actual post that I remember seeing...
This one is interesting, it was actually explained to me this is Green Snakeskin, very rare. Love this color so I'm adding this in here also.

Sweet! I've not heard that before! :) Thanks for posting it!

To me it looks like old school green linen, it wasn't out for long in that color type, but its very nice.

I'll see if I can get my SFNO out and get a shot of those green linen on it, almost as dramatic as those above. And Eric has all the nice toys!!

Jaxx,

Thanks for the search to find the "green snakeskin" posts from Eric. It is odd that it is called green; I would call it brown & black, or maybe tan & black (as the close-up photo shows). I was fortunate to receive one of the Desert Jacks in 2003 with this same micarta, and it is beautiful! Here is a thread by Jerry where he calls it "dual colored":

While I was searching, I found this thread about the Desert ARK being 1 of 13:

As you noted, both the Desert ARK & Desert Jack had this special micarta. Apparently there was some left over - I acquired a 3/16" thick SJ CG (black blade) with this micarta.

The colors seem especially pronounced in linen micarta. I also like the vivid colors of the newer green linen micarta.
