It is black and tan and am guessing it is tiger stripe? Was tiger offered on the SJ... this one is sterile.

Wash it up with some liquid dish soap and a stiff brush. Let it dry. The colors ought to pop when it dries. It looks like black and tan to me, but like I said, once you wash the oils out off of it you ought to be able to tell better. I have a tan coated ARK with similar slabs and they look real nice. There were some tan coated SJ with those slabs as well.

Whoa, what a difference that made.

Compared to freshly a scrubbed snakeskin handle.

That's what I'm talking about man. Looks great doesn't it? :D

So would you call that tiger? Or just black and tan?

Jerry could tell you for sure, but it is probably the same micarta material. It might be different in the number of layers of differing colors. Patterns can be changed based on the color layering and the depth of the cut for the handle texture. Take a look at pictures of the snake skin micarta and how the material reacts to the pattern cut into it. The diagonal rope cut of the knife you used for the comparison pic varies greatly from say the snake skin micarta's appearance when cut for an Active Duty.

As it dries further and when I look at the tighter weave of the micarta compared to the snakeskin, I think it could be green linen micarta.

Dunno...

Either way the cleanup makes it looks that much better. And no I am not asking these questions so I get it right to sell it. This one is in the select ring of what I call my "legacy" collection that I am passing on to my sons. :D

Thanks Pro for the help.

The micarta on your SJ is not the same as the tiger stripe - the tiger stripe is more tan colored than the lighter color of the SJ you have. The micarta on your SJ was a limited offering, and all of the black crinkle coated SJ's with this micarta I have seen are sterile. Jerry referred to this micarta as "dual colored", and it was also offered on the Desert ARK and Desert SJ (both limited in number). Enjoy your SJ; it is unusual and nice looking!

i would personally call that brown micarta(tan is usually much lighter in color), but im not sure if it had that name attached to it. the stiped effect is just from the colors going between brown and black (with the black micarta its grey and black). the actual tiger stripe micarta has several different colors in it, as apposed to just 2.

Good info all... While brown micarta doesn't sound like much, I think it looks great on the rope cut handle style.

At the very least I was blown away by how much better the handle looks with a little scrubbing. I bought it used and it is in pretty minty shape but never thought there was that much oil/dirt on it to mask those contrasting colors so much.

ps. In looking at it today I am still thinking this is linen vs. canvas micarta. Sorry to beat a dead horse... but I'm bored.
