what color to use for marker trick

Whatever works best for you.

Honestly, these days I do not use a marker any more unless I am demonstrating for someone else. A hand lens never runs out of ink;)

magnification is better in my findings.

More than once, I've thought I removed all the black marker from the bevel, only to discover (under magnification) a hair-thin stripe of it still persisting at the very edge. I see this a lot near the tips of many blades, where the angle is usually much more obtuse, and it takes a long while to thin it out. For this reason, I've become much more reliant on close inspection with the magnifier under very bright light, especially in the finishing stages.

I used to use the black marker with my Lansky routine. I also used water to lubricate the hones, and noticed many times, the water would prematurely rinse much of the marker off the edge. I began to not rely too much on the marker throughout the sharpening session, based on this.

But, when first setting up, the marker can be handy in the early stages, when you're trying to establish what the 'correct' angle is for your bevel. A few passes on a fine hone, initially, to see where the ink comes off, is quite handy. I've recommeded it to others here, many times, for this specific reason. I hadn't considered the red marker (or any color besides the standard black), but I could see some enhanced 'viewability' there.

I see this so often when changing edge bevel angles that I have gotten into a habit of routinely checking with a magnifying glass before moving beyond the coarsest stone.

Any color I can see will work. I've used red, blue, green, and black and have no preference.
