What compass do you carry?

Recent weeks I have been pondering over super nice compass!
While I had been looking at a Military Compass Cammenga especially.
I didn't want something huge to carry but I kinda liked the night glow of it.
But they are pretty pricey and hard to nab for a decent deal.
Friend of mine brought up a good point...
You don't need a compass that glows.....if your lost...traveling at night is foolish.
Military compass don't have something for a signaling mirror either.
Was a very good point and he is right!

Then I started broadening my search and found the Brunton 8099 Elclipse Pro of intrest.
I did the YouTube bit and it got great reviews......then I found it was a min of $80!
OMG there is a Ebay vendor selling em NIP for $32 shipped......I was all over it!!
(Not sure I can mention the vendor here without violating rules)
This thing is awesome and probably the nicest versatile light weight compass I have ever owned.
Well worth looking into for anyone compass shopping!

I am using a Silva Ranger 3 for many years now. It's very simple and lightweight and for me it works good enough. I have a number of other compasses in different styles, like a Recta DS50, Recta DP20 and lensatic compasses like the Cammenga, but I'm very much used to the Silva Ranger 3 and that's my go to compass.

The one I had in the Scouts is long gone who knows where, so I picked up a cheap Silva just to have one around.

I carry an M2 lensatic compass, I got used to it in the army and I figured why change.

Marbles pin-on....and Garmin GPSan eTrex Vista HCX.

Lost in the North woods >50 years ago, had I not heard an outboard motor on the Canadian lake we came in on, some International Nickel woods walker might just now be finding a Remington 742 rusting next to my skeleton.

Learned my lesson.

I know if the SHTF I don't wanna rely on a electronic compass.
Now if the magnetic field of the earth were to change I dunno what we'd do then?

Silva Polaris "Starter"

Light, simple, does everything I need wherever I go. Costs about $10

I carry a phosphorescent (non tritium) version of the Cammenga, worth every gram.
I have a Silva Starter as a backup/loaner.

DON'T get that Brunton! I had one and they are subject to EXTREME reading errors!

I carry and use the Cammenga military tritium. Fantastic dampened compass with no liquid to leak or get accuracy destroying bubbles in.

As a backup I carry a Tru-Nord pin on. PLUS the compass on the cap of my K&M matchcase.

REALLY?? This exact one? (8099 Eclipse Pro)
I did a lotta web searching and it got good reviews everywhere.
4 outta 5 stars about everywhere and few YouTube reviews I found were positive.
I read one or 2 reviews that said something about a air bubble right out of package.
I didn't have that issue so maybe there are a few bad ones got thru?

Had the same Silva Type 4 since 1982 :)

I have an old military compass my grandfather used in the army, plus a couple Silva starters and suunto like Kurupted showed. All work.

The suunto is my go to and the silva's are back ups/loaners. I also carry paper topos of the area I\m in and my Garmin GPS with topos and water charts i like to know where I am...

Suunto A10. It's good enough for hiking trails thru the state forests here in PA.

I've been carrying this little guy for a few months on my keychain. Found it hooked to a Boyscout camo book cover, and figured it would serve more purpose in my pocket.
(I work in a book store, and since it had no book, it would have been thrown away.)

That is a neat lil guy!
Looks like the ideal zipper pull.
Like the lil dial with increments that would be handy.

*UPDATE*
Found em on evil bay for like 3 bux shipped.
Think I'll get one for my Versipack....thanx for heads up about these.

Silva Type 5. Very basic compass for maps and easy to use. I really don't have a use for marching compasses anymore.

I added a button compass to my chapstick cap, which i use from time to time on my carbon steel knives edges. Takes no extra room in my pocket, and it's there if i need it. The first one i tried to fit was a very small compass, and i used a glue which melted the back of the compass...
Then i found a slightly bigger one, that fitted like a charm, with just a bit of pressure from the cap to hold it there.

Neat idea! Anything to save space.

Thanks for your post. Value for your money is a concern for me. I was looking for compass around the web. I have found that Liquid Filled Compass is quite handy. Price may be a bit high. But can be an option. Thanks!
