I've fallen in love with tantos after I got my tanto griptilian and want a fixed blade. I saw the cold steel recon tanto in aus8, I've seen on websites they say made in Taiwan but on videos it says made in japan. Can someone tell me where the new aus8 recon tantos are made? Thanks for any help.

I think that most Cold Steel products are made in Taiwan now.

With the rest from Japan, South Africa and China.

The folders are definitely Taiwan, with Japanese Aus-8A blades.

So that means that the blades are ground and shaped in Japan and assembled/finished in Taiwan.

The San Mai ones are from Japan...

Just over a year ago i got the BM553 and then a Magnum Tanto, and then....

More probably just the steel is shipped from japan and the knives are made in taiwan. I don't see them spending to make the blades in Japan and then not finished there.

Taiwan doesn't have much of a steel industry and most is imported from China, Japan, US, and Europe. Perhaps India as well. The main steel exporters in the world.

You have brought up a good point the Mastiff.

Considering how expensive it is to do business in Japan now (because of inflation and exchange rates), you are most likely right.

I can see that what few San Mail steel models left are probably the only ones made in Japan now.
