What defines a "custom" Emerson?

Trying to differentiate between standard and custom Emersons. Are the customs hand assembled? Or simply made from different materials? Better fit/finish? The price difference is signficant, is that due to the materials/construction or simply the rarity of some of the models? Thanks much.

Dave

the customs are hand ground and assembled by mr. emerson.

the "full" customs have zero edges, ti bolsters, and green micarta scales.

the "semi" customs have zero edges and g10 scales.

there are a few variations out there, but that about sums it up.

When people talk about custom Emersons it's usually the ones with ti bolster and green micarta.

Ernie makes the custom knives; Emerson Knives Inc produces production knives.

Some of the most valuable custom knives have black, bolsterless handles, and many have single bevel, not zero grind, edges. Many current customs have double ground blades, not chisel at all. Most models are usually seen with ti bolsters, but it varies by model.

The "semi customs" are 'handground' blades set on production handles, but rarely command much of a premium. They can be chisel ground or double ground, but are almost always satin finish.

are these customs with the black G10 handles different than the semi-customs with the handground blade on production handles? are the full custom G10 Emersons given contoured handles?

Another "semi custom", stated as such by EKI, is the CQC 12 with a production blade but an all titanium frame.

Indeed, the Emerson machine is not an easy one to follow. When they first set up the production company, EKI offered "customized" production knives. These were clearly production pieces, but could be ordered with special features like damascus blades, etc. Still a production knife , though, just as the framelock 12s (and 7s) are. If the blade has an EKI logo, it is not a custom made knife by Ernie Emerson. If it has a SpecWar logo, it is. Regardless of the other trappings of the piece. Of course, Viper logo, Bowie logo, and halfmoon logo knives are all custom too.

Thanks for the info jbravo - what would this one be considered with the skull logo?

I know it is a Christmas Commander as I purchased it but I assumed it was a full production knife? Now I wonder.

something like "limited production release".

all the attributes of a production except scale color, partially satin blade, and logo. and of course the number made.
