What did I ever do without...

Finally got the new "shop" about 50% done (enough to finish a knife that I sort of screwed someone on, thinking the move would be no big deal) and I've inherited a Jet dust collection unit and just made a Concealex sheath press yesterday. I haven't used the press yet, so maybe it's a bust, but the dust collector is the bomb! I profiled carbon fiber scales on my crappy bench grinder (some things don't change) and the dust just went away. Super cool. That CF is still a mess, though! Anyway, once I figure a way to rig the hose up better I'm sure it'll be one of those things I just can't live without. Any ideas on how to attach the hose in a good way to a bench? It is just the hose with no fitting on the end, so I think I need to buy an attachment for the end of it to broaden it's sucking dimensions.

I thought about that, but I was too lazy to go back and change it. Plus, I knew that some perv would have fun commenting on it, so it didn't take long at all for that to come true! :D

Cut the bottom out of a bleach or some other heavy plastic bottle to make a larger sucky dimension device. They hot stuff gets sucked through the plastic before it gets a chance to catch fire.

For the hose attachments, just get some two hole EMT clamps, of the appropriate size from the local hardware store, or electrical wholesale outfit.

They look like a half moon strap with a flange on each end for screws, or nails. Heck, one hole straps would probably work if they have them in the size you need.

To steal an idea from the folks at Lee Valley (link below), use rare earth magnets to "clamp" in place Mark's cut out plastic jug, a cardboard box with one side removed & a hole for the D.C. hose cut in the back, or other shroud/chute to gather & direct the dust toward the hose.

FWIW, you can buy a plastic square shroud from Lee Valley that already has the magnets in place. While that shroud has a 2.5" outlet (standard for large shop vacs), you can get a converter to widen it out to the 4" standard D.C. hose size. But the bottleneck down to 2.5" at that shroud outlet will definitely restrict the amount of air being sucked through it. So a better (and cheaper ;) :D ) idea is outlined below.

I'm a cheap bastid and figure it's cheaper to just get the rare earth magnets from Lee Valley or use some from an old computer hard drive. Then fabricate the shroud from a bottle, cardboard box & duct tape, etc and epoxy the magnets in place in it. To hold the shroud in place, all you should need is a screw in the bench for the magnet to "grab". If just the screw head isn't enough steel for the job, adding a washer should do it.
