What did I miss?

My experience with sellers on ebay has been it's nothing but a collection of cheats and dishonest people.

I don't specifically know about this seller and they may, in fact, be just fine.

So while I look, I don't bid.

I would like to win, but I normally see people bidding.
Just hoping that there isn't a known problem with seller or something else to keep folks away.

I just looked at the ad and the guy has 53 positive feedbacks. I don't see anything wrong or hidden. I have never had a problem with ebay and I have 210 positive feedbacks (ebay user name: howarddouglas@aol.com) so I have had some experience with it. I like to wait until the final moments (snipe)to win. That way you are not running the price up during the actual days of the auction. Other people do the same tactic so maybe they are lying waiting to snipe.

Sniping is a common tactic on eBay. I looked at the auction and I don't see anything suspicious about it. I've also dealt with eBay a lot in my time and have learned to be careful about certain auctions, but this one doesn't seem to raise any red flags.

He is selling two of them though... :)

A common tactic for regular bidders on e-bay is to wait until the last couple minutes of an auction to start bidding. This prevents the bids from going too high too early. Just wait, it will most likely go to a normal price in the last couple minutes.

DaveH,

Have you had a bad experience, or are you basing your opinion on something else? E-bay is, for the most part a very good site, with very honest people. I have yet to have a bad experience there. Yes, you do have some people who do nothing but sell flea market junk there, while making it sound like the best quality merchandise, but a lot of people are just trying to sell something they don't use anymore. Sellers have ratings, where people judge their service. If a seller has a bad rating, don't buy from them. If e-bay was as you say, full of cheats and dishonest people, it wouldn't be the #1 rated auction site on the net.

There is a flaw in the sniping theory. I thought I would hang on and wait for the end. I got caught between work and home and it closed before I got home.
Someone got a good deal.
I should have raised my proxy bid before I left work.

Oh well.

LOL, I wait until 20 seconds or less til I make a bid on anything on eBay.

I am surprised ebay doesn't change their tactics, I used to use an auction site a few years ago that had a much better system, they would let the auction continue past the scheduled end time until there was 5 minutes without a bid. So for example if auction was scheduled to end a 1pm and a bid was placed at 12:59pm the auction would go to 1:04, and so on indefinately until there was a 5 minute period of no bids.

By doing it that way it stopped people like me from stealing something in the last seconds, you might as well bid early, plus it created a real-time bidding war at the end, and sometimes I would pay more for an item than I wanted to, just to beat the other guy I was bidding against - a heat of the moment thing.

Well, I don't know who's too smart for whom, but as far as the link you posted in the thread opener, I got that knife. The previous fellow must have gotten another knife. But as far as this one goes, I've taken it apart, cleaned it, etc. There wasn't a lanyard on it, but I redo mine in a different color cord anyway. Apart from some light marks on the titanium from being in the pocket, it's in perfect shape. I thought $227 was a pretty good deal.

The folks who sold it were very nice and the transaction went perfectly. After a couple hundred purchases on eBay, I have been screwed only once, by a guy from Afghanistan...so go figure.

Cheers to all.

Mike

That fella was selling two Sebenzas on e-bay. im2smrt4u got the other one which is a large classic. Nice grab.

Yep, I won the large. My transaction went very well! This was my first "high dollar" buy on eBay and it went off without a hitch.
