Excuse me for asking, but I have always been intrigued about the business aspect of the knife industry.

Spyderco took on a fantastic project with the ATR. I am sure that making such a knife didn't come easy. I know that Spyderco is a learning organization. What did Spyderco learn from the ATR project? Will other knives benefit from what was learned?

Hi Dennis. It has been a learning project for sure. I can't say all yet as we've just introduced it, but...

1. It was far more difficult to bring the design to market than originally thought (over 2 years). The Golden plant was at capacity and finding a vendor capable was very difficult. As it turned out, we're doing the finish work on the blades and a combination of vendors are involved in making the knife. The cobra hood was a project in itself. The Titan is very difficult to work with (Chris Reeve should be commended and appreciated).

2. New concepts (eg; integral compresssion lock) require much refinement to achieve the consistency and attention to detail that our cusomers have learned to expect.

3. USA made products are at a disadvantage in the knife market place price-wise especially when using exotic materials like Titan and S30V.

4. BTW, the ATR & Dodo are shown in this months (SEP issue) Playboy magazine as well as a host of other publications so "New & Diffeent" does get attention.

Ill share more as time goes on.

"But honey, I just bought it for the knife."

If your wife/girlfriend believes you, then you are definitely a certified (or certifiable) Spyderknut. :D :p

It was pretty neat having a Spyderco on Playboy, but they also had the Salsa on there before.

Yes, I was surprised to see it in Playboy, very happy, everyone should know about Spyderco quality! Paul

I have a collection of Playboys going back to the '60's.They always have had knives in them,in the "gifts for men" and new gadgets type articles. Also there have been large ads for knives, one I remember was the Schrade LB7(Buck 110 clone).

I have said before one knife article in a non knife mag.such as Playboy will reach more people than a years worth of ALL the knife mags put togather.

So, are they September's "Playmates of the Month", or the sexy, sharp centerfold?.:D.

By the company president no less. For shame Sal :D . Really though, thanks for the input, I really like to see that Spyderco listens to their customers so well.

Whoah! Playboy! That's simply too AWESOME! I can't wait to lay my paws on the ATR and DoDo.. They are sooo Sweet! :D
