Been a lurker on this forum for quiet some time. Been dabbling as well in collecting axes/hatchets etc. I have a helko werk blade from quiet a while back that I refurbished and but the leather guard on it as my go to user on the property. I recently came across and acquired this E.C. Simmons Keen Kutter Kon Kave. I am in the process of cleaning this up but I have been digging and digging but I cannot find any information on these other than 1 or 2 postings for sale. It seems the Keen Kutter is relatively rare but the Kon Kave is on the upper echelon of rarity but I have been wrong before! I would love some assistance/help from you guys who are more knowledgeable than I on historical information for this particular head.

Thanks gents!

I can't figure out how to add an image onto this thread so if there is assistance on that, I do have a photo.

It did, thank you. I posted the photo for reference

I have two E. C. Simmons catalogs (PDF) one from 1912 and one from 1939. I did not find a KON-KAVE axe listed in either.
------------------------------------------------------------

FWIW, some Kelly stuff:

1898 Patent by J. P. Kelly DESIGN FOR AN AX OR HATCHET
". . . the leading or material feature of my design consists in an ax or hatchet having a depression in each face thereof, said depression commencing a short distance above the bit or cutting edge thereof and extending from thence in a plane surface to the eye."

Bob
SO am I looking at a Kelly brand that someone stamped with Simmons? Or did Simmons basic buy the rights and sell it as a simmons?

No implications intended. I believe Simmons sold axes with "depressed faces" branded KON-KAVE as I have seen others in pictures. Am only saying I could not find information/documentation to share as to when these were sold. The Kelly information was included based on the post by C crbnSteeladdict . I am guessing that Simmons did not manufacture KON-KAVE axes (or any axes?), but I cannot say that with certainty.

It's my understanding that E C Simmons was a hardware store or store's that had their axes made by company's like Kelly. So all keenkutter items were sourced out to other company's that made them for E C Simmons.
