What do I have here?

I was at a local knife show this weekend, and some older man walking by happened to mention that he had an older version of my straight handled Steelheart. This guy also mentioned that he wanted to sell it. Of course, I had to buy it, but I wonder if anybody can tell me exactly what I bought? The blade has no coating at all on the actual flat grind. The ricasso and parts of the tang are covered. The steel stock is thicker than my other straight handled Steelheart, so I think it is 5/16". Question is, do I have A2 or INFI? Really doesnt matter much to me, as the knife is totally awesome, and already has been through a little lovin.

That is the original sheath from Busse. Any idea when this knife was made?

Another pic. Did this knife originally have coating on the actual blade grinds, or did it come bare from the shop?

I wonder, did the old guy take the coating off this blade? Here's the other side.

I'll take a stab at it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

SHII.
INFI.
Finish is from shop.

Ok, one other stupid question. How collectable is this knife in used condition? Is it worth too much to a collector for me to go out and use it some more? It is not only thicker steel stock than my other straight handled Steelheart, it feels like it is a little wider in the handle. Feels better to me, so I really wanna use it.

I'll get in ahead of the pack...;)

It is worthless!!! Send it to me, and I'll cover the shipping, and throw in $50 to take the sting out of the deal...

Like many others here, I am a giver!!!:D

Danbo,

Wet the coated area behind the blade but in front of the grips and see if the infi dimples show up. That grind looks awful vertical for an infi grind, but could be the result from polishing the blade. You can also do the same test on the rear pommel. A drop of oil will work just fine. As far as value, my fatties were very close in price to the regular SHSH's. BUT, even the standards seem to be from .270 stock (at least on mine) so were only talking 1/32" here. I'd go ahead and use it. I use mine. Glad you're going to keep it as SHSH's and SHBM's with smooth or slotted bolts are my weakness after SHBA's in the same configuration. You can always get a refurb from the shop if you want, and it will be like new. If you got it for a good price go beat the snot out of it with NO REGRETS!!!!!

Mt. Vernon, IL knife show. They have it every November. It is a small show, but lots of good people. Half the room is custom knifemakers and the rest is people selling parts of their collections. You can find a lot of good stuff at shows like that.

I have heard good things about the Mt. Vernon Show. I might have to make my way down the sometime. :D

I'm going to say A2 not INFI, 5/16" and I really think the owner stripped the coating off.

As far as value, she'll hold her own just as well as any other SH-SH. The missing coating and scratches won't hurt...used Busses hold value just as well as new ones. Maybe 25% lower than a mint condition piece, but thats still a good chunk of money.

I'm with DN, the handle and bolts makes me think it is A2 and I've never seen one that was finished that way from the shop so I'll bet the previous owner did it.

Either way you've got a nice one

:D:D

I'm sticking to my guns. I think that it is in INFI, with an odd factory finish. One, note the shape of the blade. I think that this knife was made just before the Ergos. Two, you can still see the grind lines on the blade. If the previous owner took off the finish himself, the insuing sanding would have removed the grind lines.

Not if he chemically strippped the finish.

I gotta go with DN and Porkerson on this

A2
Stripped (after leaving the Shop)

Still a Goodie

Looks a lot like this one

Hey man, sweet find. I thought the guy was joking when he said $75.

I'd say A2 also, given the pommel coating. But, the pommel grind does look later.

I'd also vote for post-shop mods.
