i picked up this knife today at a yard sale. it is a buck 110 U and is like new. never been sharpened. it is an automatic knife. (switchblade) it had "cumberland mountain knife and tool" stamped on the reverse side of the blade. i can find some on the internet but they all have an oblong push button to open it with. as you can see, mine is round. anybody got any idea what i got and if it is worth anything?? thanks.

I don't have any first hand personal knowledge, of course, being a paragon of virtue...but the Bucks with the hole in the blade and round button are what is termed a single action auto [blade only deploys when button is pushed]...I've heard they can be found at various blade auctions for ~$95 NIB...

The oblong buttoned autos (with the notch in the blade) are dual-action [you can also pull the blade out manually] and go for ~$135 NIB...

...Or so I've heard...

thanks for the info chickentrax. :D anyone else "heard" anything about these??;)

Chickentrax has given you the scoop on autos. They come in a few different flavors. Yours is just one variation. Auto 110's are aftermarket conversions and won't be warrantied by Buck should it break..

Most prices I have seen they run from $100 to $140. But will say that they all have been NIB and Nickle silver Bolsters. with recessed button holes in the scales. on the ones with buttons.

Try a search here on auto. Has been some past threads and pics

What kind of deal did you get?

I have seen some single-action brass bolstered conversions...but all the recessed button conversions I've seen have not been 110's or 112's; they were [I believe] 500's, with the button in the bolster (unlike the button-in-the-scale 110/112)...

They are all quite clever conversions, with the Buck spring replaced with a much longer spring pressing on the blade kick. The dual-action is a design which I much admire...the rockerbar pivot is also replaced with a stud & screw...the whole knife appears to have been converted with a minimum of disassembly...

...Or so rumor has it... :p

BTW: Those Cumberlands seem to be scarce now, I don't think Cumberland is making them anymore...it has a certain collectability...

You might want to try for a 110 dual-action or even a 112...as Pack Rat said, they seem to be nickel silver bolstered, and quite a few have the "charcoal gray" scales...very nice...

thanks for all the help guys. as you have already realised, i know very little about these knives. would it be a no no to put it on e-bay. guess i could play dumb (would not really be playing!!LOL) and say that it is just some kind of cumberland conversion with a little button on it!!;)

eBay has banned the sale of "switchblades", and there are a bunch of banned word descriptions, plus photos of the knife showing an obvious button have been prohibited...but of course, some do get listed, whether by chance or design...usually by someone using innoculous descriptions not containing any of the Forbidden Words...

If there are complaints, or it is detected, eBay will pull the auction... :(

Like Trax said, it might be a fun collectable...

Or put it up here in the Trade part of the exchange. If you can do that without having to upgrade membership.

I believe the company that did the conversions with the "oblong" switch button is named Paragon.

And just for the record, Cumberland Knife & Tool is NOT Bill Horn at Cumberland Knife Works.

Bill has ongoing problems with being mistaken for the other company.

Wasn't that during the war Darryl? (the BIG one)
There I was, laying in wait as the enemy approached on that god forsaken atoll. Suddenly...the velcro of my genuine corinthian cordura 110 sheath pulled opened. Those infantrymen stopped in their imperial footsteps hearing that fabric pull. Quietly I lay...without a sound. They waited for another sound. Nothing. Then they moved on. I stalked them for an hour. A squad of regulars fresh and ready to go. They stopped at a lagoon.
Fishing.
They brought up so many fish. I couldn't stand it...I was without rations for days. All I had left was a few packs of the green circles that came in with the rations of ham and lima beans, spagehetti, andstew that were long gone. I caved in. I waved my BVDs off my rifle and approched.
They turned out to be fairly friendly given that I had those packs (not my BVDs) to offer for humane treatment. We sat around with my 110...slicing and eating sushi.
Ah, yes, that Alaskan 110...it served me well.
