recently i bought two sharpening stones for 15 dollars, a 12 and 3/4" soft Arkansas stone in an attractive wooden box marked The Cutters Edge. The other stone is unmarked, no box nothing. It is 8 inches long and about 2 and a half inches wide. It is a reddish brown with some chips in the sides. I think it is a water stone but honestly this is not my specialty and I really have no idea. What do I have, and what is it really worth? (I know i got a deal at 15 bucks)

If it's a soft Arkansas, then it's a soft Arkansas- novaculite.
Excellent stone for all but the hardest steels.

Get a microscope and compare the particle size with that of a known grit.
