What do I need to grind my blade with?

My brother gave me some stainless steel from a construction site and I am thinking of making a knife with it.
What do I grind the blade with? I have a table top grinder and an industrial belt sander. Will these work?
The steel is 1/4" thick 2" wide and @15"long.

I got some stainless "mystery metal" from a friend of mine in the military. It only hardened a small amount from a light oil quench, so I made a couple of kitchen knives out of it. They outperform the rest of the kitchen, so I think I lucked out. I'll post some pics at some point. If your steel shows to be magnetic, I'd say try it, but don't invest too much work into it, you may be dissapointed. A spark test might give more info on it's composition, too.
As for what to grind it with... What do you have? Anything that will move metal is a good start. I started with hacksaws and hand files, then one of those old crank grinding wheels, then a 1/4hp grinding wheel, now a 3/4hp belt sander. They all worked, the only variables have been speed and control.

my dad is a sheetmetal worker, and he says that they only use 300 series for construction, it's more rust resistant. i way you can tell is that if it is mill bar 316 is a chrome type color, while 440 has a blue coat on it.
