Well,
Looks like recondoc is finally getting a Sifu. Are there any care/use/deployment tips that I need to know about this knife?
Thanks for all contributions.

1. Don't cut yourself with it.

2. Being that it has a recurve blade, it's best to use just the edges of the hones (and not the flats) of a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

3. Don't scare TOO MANY people with it.

4. It doubles GREAT as a steak-knife is a fancy resturant. (In this case, please feel-free to ignore point #3.:D.).

a round rod or hone would work better because of the blade recurve - but my flat one works fine, i sharpen back 1/2, then the fron 1/2, and it shaves soo - and i have heard not to over lube the rolling lock (not 100% sure on this one) and thats really about it - ya will be suprised how well it carries for such a big knife.....

Thanks guys,
I've been using nothing but ceramic hone sticks for about the last two years. (Anybody want a Lansky for cheap?) They have worked great on my KO Boa.
Keep the info coming, I gotta have something while I wait for the new knife to get here. (Damn this addiction.)

I had one of the old ATS-34 ones, but unfortunately sold it. It was definitely smoother than most Benchmades and even Spydercos I've handled. Fit and finish were really excellent. It does, as mentioned, carry much more nicely than one would expect of a knife its size. Maybe comparable to a Military, though quite a bit heavier in terms of ease-of-carry. I've been thinking about another one for a while...

Got to agree: I've sharpened a lot of curved blades (including khukuris) on a Hewlett Jewelstik and it works well. I don't think you can wear one out. Also makes a great gag gift for women ("I got you something with genuine deBeers diamonds!"). Just be prepared to duck when they open it!

For those of you using the Jewel sticks, How do you maintain the angle? Just by feel and practice or do you use a fixture of some kind?

Mike does great work.., reasonable prices, and makes this piece very easy to carry!!

recondoc1,

I use the Jewelstik freehand. As with any freehand sharpener, I just err a little on the side of too shallow an angle until I feel the edge of the blade start to resist. Of course, the three-sided Jewelstik model comes with a threaded end and a rod that permits it to be used with Lansky-type clamp devices. So if you had a system like a Lansky and simply wanted a longer abrasive (ten inches for the kitchen model), the Jewelstik would do the trick for you.

have had best luck on mine sharpening freehand, w/a narrow stone, or a round rod too would work well i would think - my GATCO doesnt work on it very well at all on this one.........
