hello everyone.

I am hoping to start making some small fixed blade knives soon. but, I have a problem. I have never made a knife before and I am not 100% sure on what I have to do and how to do it.

First off. could someone please give me a list of the basic tools and equiptment I will need to get started. also a place where I can buy some steel for making them with. or what to search for on google. I live in the UK so shipping from the US might be a problem.

Any help atall would be greatly apreciated.

The $50 knife Shop
It confused me for a long time.
Forging is NOT necessary; you can just file and grind to create a knife (stock removal)

The goop quench is total Bull, commercial quench oils are available, even grocery store canola oil works much better.

Junkyard steels require skill and experience to identify the steel and heat treat it properly.
You can buy proper steel like 1084FG from Aldo very cheaply.

I like cable damascus, but that advanced project has no place in a beginners book.

The home built grinders are the best thing about this book, but there is now a huge amount of info for 2x72” belt grinders on the web, including free plans.

Steel
The “welding steel” at Home Depot / Lowes… is useless for knives.
If you send out for heat treating, you can use O1, A2, D2, CM154, ATS34, s30v, 440C, plus many others.

If you heat treat yourself, find some 1070, 1080, 1084,
1084 FG sold by Aldo Bruno is formulated just for knifemaking.

... A good solid work bench, chair and a vice,… and somewhere to put it.
 
In thinking about this, If I were in jail and wanted to make a knife the most important thing would be to have a suitable piece of steel and some means of shaping it, i.e. a file. It would be difficult and take a long time, and probably be ugly as sin, but with these two items I feel confident that I could make a knife.

A hack saw and some means of hold the steel while filing away on it would be very helpful. Clamps are cheaper than a vise, and more versatile. Don't get me wrong a vise is a VERY useful tool to have, but even with my vise, I still use clamps for many things.

You're going to want to drill holes in the tang for pins or lanyard holes. You could go over to a buddy's place who had a drill and bits and use them for the fifteen minutes that it will take to drill the needed holes. Or do like my dad did when he was a kid and made a knife, wrap a roll of friction tape around the handle. He said he used it to clean out several deer before he lost it.

You will find various pieces of wood useful for different things, backing for sandpaper, holding the blade while filing the bevel, using it to make a handle for the knife, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks. i have basic tools like files and drills and stuff. i just need a bench. although. i think my grandad has all the stuff i need. i must ask him. maby he could help, i might even make a half decent one then! thanks for all your help guys. its greatly apreciated :)
