What do I really Need for the Job?

Hello all,

I would like to try my hand at free sharpening one of my knives.

The steel is D2. I have read one is wasting their time if it is not a diamond stone due to the heavy carbides in the steel. I really have no clue?

It's seems stones prices vary in price by as much as 100%. I am not planning on selling a knife to fund the stone. From those of you with free hand sharpening experience with D2 what is really necessary? Is a diamond stone really required?

Appreciate any suggestions. Thx TD

Norton Crystalon will work great. All depends on how refined an edge you need. For a strong-performing utility edge a combination stone is about all you need - 10-20 bucks for a name brand.

Yep. Silicon Carbide stones work fine on D2 for setting the initial bevel and apexed edge. Norton JB8 combo stone for around $22 will do the job. You can refine on other stones after the heavy lifting is done by the SiC.
