What do I suggest

Hi again folks.
I know a few of the folks up here who trap during the winter. They have quite a few knives which I have sharpened up for them. They are using one of those horrible less than $5 pull through sharpeners for touch up. I explained that there are other ones out there that work a whole lot better. They are pull through but made by Lansky etc which to me are pretty good for what they want or at least better than what they are using.
What would you folks suggest what to get for them. They feel that they have to touch them up during the skinning process but what they are using is horrible.
I have seen a few but not sure which one so any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks again

For simple touch ups during use skinning or processing meat ... A Ceramic Honing Rod like a knife steel but ceramic so you are actually sharpening the knife not just pushing the edge around ... that or a simple field stone like the Baryonyx Artic Fox.

As far as pull through sharpeners ... I can't recommend any sorry.

+1.

If folks aren't willing to use a simple stone for quick freehand sharpening, it seriously limits their options. I doubt they'd want the hassle to carry, and setup, Sharpmaker for that type of usage. Not to mention the cost.

If they want to stay cheap, I'd consider the Buck 97080 EdgeTek dual grit diamond sharpener. Only around $27, 2 diamond grits (325/750), compact at about 12" OAL and 7" sharpening surface, and you can use it like a steel but it'll actually sharpen due to the diamond surfaces. Also they are rounded, so can be used for blades with curves.

I suggest they keep bringing the knives to you so you get fabulously wealthy from your sharpening business (?) . . . but . . . that they take a few knives with them each and just trade out a dull on' for a sharp on' when needed.
I read that here the other day and it makes a lot of sense.

Thanks folks for the suggestions. They are country folks and have been trapping for many years and are used to doing it their way. Yes I have sharpened a couple of their knives but they are not really interested, it seems, to have a nice edge. They just want something that they can pull through and touch up the edge. I looked and there are a couple of units made by Lansky for one that pull through and seem to have a good angle and the right kinds of stones that might suit their needs. There are also a couple others that might work for them but just thought I would ask opinions on what might work for them. Is it right maybe not but if it satisfies them and it works for them then is would be OK. The units that I looked at are all single ones that are held by one hand and then the blade is pulled through.

Lansky and sharpmaker are two I'd recommend otherwise get some bench stones.

Thanks for the answers. I will look into the Lansky that pull through and that might work for what they want.
Thanks again.

If the folks you are trying to help are dead set on a pull-through and won't accept anything else, here's an inexpensive one that offers a dual grit: coarse diamonds, and a fine ceramic. I have not used this and couldn't recommend it, but if someone is determined to use a pull through, I'd probably suggest trying this one as it should handle most steels and give them more flexibility than most of these things. And they're cheap, and highly rated on a certain big river site. :p

Thank you maximus83 for the suggestion. Now that looks like something that they would use and as you said it has both coarse and fine side so should be OK. I will look into that for them.
Thanks again for all of the helpful ideas.
