What do knifemakers do for relaxation?

All work and no play would make anyone a dull person, as they say.
Considering the amount of time, a man spends either pounding away in his workshop or grinding until his muscles ache, what does he do after "office hours"?

Any interesting hobbies to speak of to relax and recuperate? :)

Odly enough, first comes make knives, experiment with something different or a new test. Second greatest time investment -- read, and write. Next would come trainig Labradors. Then for 12 rounds a day through my USFA Old Army .45 Colt, 50 yard target, fireing line 3 steps from the front door of my shop at a 7 inch gong.

First is play with my kids, then I umpire baseball, hunt, read and shoot the ASA, IBO and BHA 3D archery circuits.

In my free time I like fishing, shooting, and riding our 4X4 quads with my son.. We like going to the movies too.. Soon we want to start fabricating stuff like Mini-bike choppers, go-carts and the like..
Spending time with Little Trace is a high priority with me.. He wont be 13 very long at all..
Of course time with the wife is very prized too.
Doing what I do affords me time with my family many guys dont get.. I am very lucky..

Once I clear my head, picture below......

I enjoy bass fishing with my son and attending my daughters cheerleading games and competitions.

When the lights go out in the shop,I ride my Aprilia Mille sport bike when the weather is right. Also practice Kombatan, or just check out a movie.

I just joined an American Indian drum group, I am learning the songs and beats. Shooting, hunting, many other things as well.

Hunting, trapping, spending some quality time with the wife and little girl, and of course shooting my newly aquired flint lock 50 cal!

Reading, fly tying, fly fishing, traveling with my wife, entertaining family and friends, riding "2 wheels and a motor", working out at the gym.

First and foremost is time with family, but being at the gym is right in there.

I'm really fortunate to have been born and raised in the Northwest, as pretty much any outdoor activity you can think of is readily available.

Mt. St. Helens is only about 45 minutes from here, so we make a lot of trips up there to play around.

I used to work for a fishing guide, so fishing is high on my list too.

Man, all these things to do, what am I doing making knives?!?! ;) ....j/k

And checking the forums!!!

I wish we knew, there is no time out in the shop and there is no R&R. It's hard to relax when our shop is in the backyard and it is a business after all. No complaints mind you but it is always on our minds to what materials to order next, time matters and it has to be ducks in a row to keep it going and planning. No plans to retreat from it all. Currently knife making is my way to relax. It is my retreat from my day job which I would much rather not have but bills bills bills! Would love for knifemaking to be my fulltime gig but that will have to wait a few years yet I think.

My wife and I spend alot of time together doing whatever. I also go dirt biking with my step daughter (a newly acquired hobby) which is a blast. I'm sorry to see summer end, we just got our first bit of snow today which sucks! Oh well when you live north of 60 I guess you kinda have to expect snow sometime. :D

Landscaping, in the springtime it can be pretty hard to force myself into the shop when there is pruning and planting to be done. Interestingly enough I have hurt myself much worse landscaping than I ever have in the forging shop. Ruptured disks, terrible burns, cuts, abrasions etc... I hardley ever get hurt it the shop.

Here is a web page with some of my yard work:

My other hobbies are not so innocent. I collect fine cigars and love to collect tasty things to drink that contain alcohol. I don't really smoke or drink all that much I just like to collect them.

I restore my 74 Javelin, tinker wit odd stuff in the shop (other than knives) Ride my motorcycle, keep my handgun and M-4 shooting skills up and occasionally chat in Bladeforums.com.
