What do most people do with rare, noncustom knives? (Is that what semi-custom means?)

The ones that aren't production and aren't made to a client's custom specs, like the ones from Ganza and ones picked up from blade shows? With crazy dyed giraffe bone and exotic woods and all that for handles? Do people usually collect them and preserve them rather than put them to good use?

I picked up two CABS recently. One is a LE and the other is from a show, sage finish with tequila sunrise scales, marked 1 of 5. I wanted to use the latter real hard this weekend, but I feel like it's more collectible and should be preserved for some reason. With only five ever made, you'd think it should be worth more than the LE, but it's not.

i would use it, that's why you bought it.

as for the other ganza knive's most are collected and stored away.

I had "the" Silent Knight prototype for awhile. I got it used and then used it myself. I say use it!

Use it! As long as you dont thrash it too hard, heck, even if you do thrash it Im sure busse can make it look near new again by recoating it for a few bucks if you ever decide to retire/sell her. Ive done this before and have had great success. Ive got the same boss st with pumpkin scales (1 of 6), I use it, my 1 of 6 zilla, my #1 uncle mofo and I plan to use my super rare satin INFI SHSH2 once I get the chance. Something about using the more collectible models makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Now the mammoth tooth customs and the like, well if I could afford one maybe but unlikely. to each his own.

If you like it and plan to keep it, USE IT. If you get it and go "eh, not my thing" sit on it a while and sell it.

Yeah, I do like it and want to use it. I was never planning to resell it but was planning to give it away eventually unless we go through some great times together. I suppose this knife in particular doesn't reach that level where I don't want to touch it at all. G10, coated blade... it's a user all right.

If I could afford one of those customs with exotic handle materials, I'd probably never use it, though.

Honestly, this is my approach to knives like that. Either sell it and buy a standard edition, or trade it for a standard edition to someone who wants the coated version, or strip it. Once you strip the blade portion of the knife, all the beauty and appeal of '1 of 5'ness will be one and you'll be much more likely to use it.

I picked up one of those 1 of 5 CABS and did not think twice about adding it to my EDC rotation.

I started with the idea I would be a collector. Now I am a collector of users and all but two safe queens are gone. Use it or loose it!

Hardly anything escapes my clutches, but I have managed to not use a couple that I sold, or plan on selling. I am a user and abuser when it comes to knives.

I don't even use my CGs, but I'm one of those collector/hoarder types. I pretend that they're investments; that makes it OK to buy more Bussekins than I could ever use.

rare but non-custom just means a limited release, or a release that doesn't show up on the aftermarket very much. The desert storm fighters of the 90's may not be "rare" in that hundreds were made, but they are exceedingly rare to come up on the market. "Semi-Custom" generally means a knife that is part of a production line that is modified to be a 'variant', something done to make the knife unique but not to start from scratch on the design or the manufacturing process, at least this holds where busse is concerned. It's not a term you hear much around here, more often then not it's "Custom order" or "Custom Shop".
