What do so many spearpoints have so little belly?

Spearpoints need belly, but so many have so little. Why is that?

Contrast these:

I believe it is because many spearpoints are based on the SAK. It was not until recently that I had seen a spearpoint blade other than a SAK, & I'm interested in knives.
GEC are in contrast, because they purposely take inspiration from the past.

I like some belly too. Old Wenger's had a little belly, & I liked that better than the Vic.

New Wengers have plenty of belly too.

The spear point is designed to have a decent penetration ability at the point.
More belly defeats that purpose.
You can have more belly, but that (e.g. the Sunfish/Elephant Toe blade) is not really a true spear points any more IMHO.

I'm done buying new knives or spending over $50 on any knife. Many nice knives fit that criteria.

only thing is, if you want a US made knife, not too many in the $50 range. i don't go overboard but willing to come up a little.

Very strong tip and still a piercer, that's it IMO. Here is a kind of "spear point" with plenty of belly and excellent point (the upper one... the Douk slips in all the time like a mouse in the hay. Great little knife, by the way, but not a spear, cough !). The "Futuriste" (most stupid name ever...) is a splendid slicer and effective piercer (not for very brutal stuff however because of the thin blade).

There are many. Schrade, Camillus, Western, Imperial, Case, etc. There are millions of USA made knives out there, and in great shape, to be had for than $50.

SPLENDID ! Love the bone on the "cartridge" shields (show the blades, come on...)

Like new, certainly but not new USA made Schrade and Camillus. Was trying to point out to cards94 that millions of great USA made knives are out there and still easily obtainable for $50 or less.

How much belly you can design into a blade depends largely on the clearance above the spring center (where the center pin goes through) as well as the butt end. You need a large knife with a wide bolster and plenty of clearance at the butt to fit that bill. That's why a lot of the old knives with wide spears are teardrop shaped. It might appear that a larger blade would fit into the butterbean but I'll bet anything substantially wider would slap the spring at the center and the butt when closing.

Frankly I think the spearpoint on the SAK is just about perfect. For what I use a knife for anyway. I wouldn't change it.
