Hi,
I'm new to this forums and amazed how much knives some of you carries on your person. I wonder if any of you that have been stopped by cops and got away (with/without warnings)? What is your explaination(s) to the cops on why you carry such knife(s)?

Well, I don't carry anything illegal, so that is my explanation. If I actually got in a discussion about self-defense issues, the real reason why citizens need to be prepared to defend themselves rather than relying on the government is that there is no way that there could ever be enough police to protect everyone at every time, so each person is partially responsible for his/her own safety.

Bugisman,

Welcome to the forums!!

As long as the knives that you are carrying are legal there is no law against how many you can carry. it does help to have reasons for each knife. This will help difuse the situation. For instance, I carry a small plain edge Sebenza:this is for rope, tape and other light jobs. A Serrated spyderco rescue jr:this is for wood, plastic and other tougher jobs. Last, I carry a 5"bladed fixed blade concealed inside my waistband:This is a defensive knife. I also do a lot of spontanious hiking and like to have a fixed blade with me for such hikes, this is the reason that I would state for carrying this knife. So you see, each knife has a special purpose. This looks better in the eyes of a police officer than if you had said " I don't know why I carry so many knives officer, I just do."

Whatever you do, do not say you are carrying the knife to defend yourself, as this implies to the police a willingness to use the knife on another person. Give a "practical" reason instead e.g. for work, to cut rope, fishing, hunting etc.

Down here in Aus, i don't have a legal reason to carry. My SAK and WAVE usually pass, although i was once arrested for the SAK (and let go 5 mins later, but it was kinda scary)

I live the sort of low-risk life that rarely brings me to the attention of law enforcement, but if a cop asks me, they're convenient to have and they're sales samples too - here's my card!

My answer is that I'm a collector and student of knife design and materials. I explain the design features and materials used in the knives I'm carrying. I just say I'm field testing them to see how they carry and work on various materials I come across.

If the knife is kind of large, I indicate that I got a good deal on the knife and was an economical way for me to get a sample of the alloy and blade grind I wanted to test.
