needs some love but looks really good:D
p.s. whats with people putting electrical tape on axe handles under the head?
i always see this, some of my step-dads axes, ones ive found ant thrift stores and pawn shops, this one...

i understand the "value" aspect of what you are saying.IMO i think it will be much more valuable as a functional tool to be used for many many years to come:D cant wait to put some wood in it and put it in some wood:p

I wouldn't say cleaning it will ruin the value. I'd clean it, sharpen, re handle and put to use. Nice find.

You should probably post your question to a forum that has experts.

Otherwise I would say that is a nice find indeed.

That's a beauty. It doesn't really seem to have too many miles on it. The poll looks perfect and the bit seems fully intact, like it's only been sharpened a few times. I don't think it's so rare and old that the value will be too affected by a little rust removal. Some guys wrap the neck in tape to minimize dings while splitting, although that axe doesn't seem to have a good profile for splitting.

Looks like it'll be a nice user.
And that electrical tape thing....I never knew why people did that as well. Maybe to prevent damage in case of overstrikes? Just a guess.

thats a helluva find. get a nice handle, clean her up and you'll have a really nice tool. congrats...

I think I've been looking for an axe just like that one for camping. :D

As to the value. A thing can't lose value if you never sell it. If it were me I'd clean it up, maybe even polish it, and use it.

I was going to bring up the electrical tape thing before I saw you mentioned it, I guess it's so common because the rubbery texture makes them think "waterproof" and it will handle the elements. You see it on a lot of old tools.

Regarding the tape:

From "The Axe Book" by Dudley Cook:

"As an emergency measure, it is a good idea to always have a roll of black electrician's tape handy. A long, overlapped wrapping of this tape can do wonders for a cracked handle, and may even make it last indefinitely if you do not abuse it again."

:D

'back in the day' when i was a young pup splitting wood with a sledg and wedge and i would over-reach a little and hit the handle, duct tape was in order sometimes:D
its just there to protect the handle from further splintering... thats all...
i have paracord around my GB forest axe for protection... i also have it on my trailhawk... (neither are cracked, its just there for protection)... paracord looks much nicer that duct tape;)
