I recently got a large khukuri that is very old. It's supposedly made before WW1 and has markings going down the spine. I really want to find out what the markings say. Could someone please translate for me?

Here's a picture of the markings:

Those appear to be Devanagari characters. Literally "Veerchandra Jagkarat". Probably the previous owner's name.

Hi, the Devanagari script says "Shree Tin Chandra Jung", a reference to PM Chandra Sumsher Jung Bahadur Rana. The numbers, I am not sure if it is "1012 8" or "1912 8", as the engraving is not very clear. However, since PM Jung Bahadur was in the office from 1903 B.S. (Bikram Sambat - Nepali Calendar, which would be 1846 A.D.), I am inclined to believe that it is "1912 8". But then again, that is 5 months before he was in the office. If the marking follows the date, it should be when he was still a Major-General.
Regardless, if what I've said is correct, that khukuri is from the mid 19th century. Excellent find.

Welcome Holden! Is that from the IMA/AC stash? Do you have the sheath and Chakma and Karda as well? Its very rare to find the sheaths nowadays as they have gotten pretty old and ate up by worms and such. Very nice piece. Id love to see a pic of the whole knife if you got one. Some of those old ones have had their markings filed off and reinscribed so it is possible for it to be even older than the inscription reflects. Thanks for posting:thumbsup:
