I need something that will penetrate the spine of a pit bull attacking a dog or person. Recently had a pit bull attack our neighbor's dog while she was out with my wife. Not a pretty sight. Luckily the dog did not turn on the neighbor or my wife. what do you guys think would be appropriate for a medium sized woman in such a situation. ( the neighbor's dog survived and the pit bull was captured?

Public defender, Anorexic Badger are the two that come to mind. Not to bad in weight, not bad to carry depending on the sheath. Fit the hand comfortably.

Glad to hear the dog and especially the women are okay.

Edit: Maybe a killer bee?

If the intent is to buy RIGHT NOW, I would say either of the Meaner Streets versions that Skunk has at the Company Store. The SP NARKs would be perfect for this, but I think they are reaching the outer limits for discreet carry.

If you want to shop around, I'd second the Anorexic Badger recommendation.

Not to be callous to pets here, but are you sure that you want your wife intervening hand to hand with a vicious dog in order to stop an attack on another dog? Now to help another person, especially a child or elderly person, or to defend oneself, absolutely. IMO, even successfully attacking a big vicious dog with a knife is going to involve sustaining some serious damage to oneself.

I have pulled a knife to defend myself from a dog, but simply because I had no choice. It was successful too, but because the owner saw the knife and quickly called off his dog. I didn't actually have to use it, thank God.

If she must carry a knife instead of a gun, this might be the perfect application for a Tali-Whacker.

I think she really needs a can of pepper spray, that's what the Post Office workers carry.

I would agree, if it's legal in the area it would be ideal. For instance, it can be used while retreating from a charging dog and importantly, it puts a wider area between you and the attacker, be it canine or human.

IIRC, I believe that pepper spray is recommended for these situations. I recommend doing a search, there have been lots of thread discussing defense against dogs.

Sad to see all these Pit Bull attacks as I have one and his son which is part Lab. My dog would never harm anyone, UNLESS they tried to harm me. He has played with children who have pulled his ears, tail, poked his eyes and anything else you could imagine. He just grins and wags his tail. It is natural for a PB to not attack a person,(hence neither person was attacked) unless they were raised improperly, which so many are. (no human socialization). The owners not the dogs need to be held responsible....period. Incidentally Golden Retreivers bite more people than any other breed...yes because there are more of them. Again though it is the owners responsibility to raise their dog properly. Any doubters do a search on PB's History and temperment. Peace

The is the truth.

Back to subject at hand, let your wife handle a couple different ones and see what fits her hand best.

Depending on what she is willing to carry.... I'd recomend one of the longer expandable Asp Batons "If she's comfortable with it" , depending where you are located training classes aren't that hard to find.

A good pepperspray like Freeze +P is also a good choice.... but my personal favorite for a woman walking is somthing you can pick up at the local CO-OP or Tractor Supply aka TSC... A nice Cattle Prod... they are very effective on all dogs :) and at about 3 feet long you get some distance.

I wouldn't recomend a knife of any type for a dog attack.... point being is she would have to get to close to the dog and would probably get bitten in the process.

Thanks for the input guys. Will try the pepper spray for starters. Probably couldn't talk the women into carrying anything else anyway, although they mentioned a knife right after the attack. Another thoughtI had would be an umbrella with a nice pointy tip. When opened it could possibly keep a dog away while looking for an escape route.

MikeH, Raden, I certainly would not expect them to try and interceed in a dog fight. They were concerned at the time that the dog might turn on them also. Would have liked to have had something as a last defense.

Again, thanks for the input guys

I beat an Akita to death once on the Marine Base I was stationed at when it attacked a 2 yr old child with a folding entrenching tool. Reason I mention that is for walks or dog attacks that may be perfect for a woman. Light to carry on walks and folded it is small and non threatening. For general self defense my wife carries a Frontsite titanium hybrid that was measured for her etc. She is like a carbon copy of Jessica Alba so she is pretty small and kinda prissy but she feels safe with it. I use those when in other countries to wear with my suit gave me a sense of protection in places like Nigeria, China, India and Romania etc without being obnxious and alarming the locals.

BTW that entrenching tool toook care of that nasty dog pretty quick.

I'll agree as well. Get her a can of quality pepper spray.

Much better idea than having your wife slashing and stabbing away at two dogs fighting.

Check out Fox Labs pepper spray. They have the best reputation in the business.

Very true but it's really frowned on to beat the crap out of the moronic owner unfortunately.
My ex carried an original MS whenever she was out and about wheather on horseback or just out and about on the farm. Damn, sure do miss that knife :D
Bob Mills

Get one or two of these:

http://www.coldsteel.com/95sseries.html

Or maybe some Newt Livesay Whup A** Sticks.

They should take care of any beat, two or four footed.

On a side note, my uncle has a put bull, as do some of my cousins. Nicest dog you ever met, but when it meets a coon, it turns ferocious. I would hate to have to beat off a pit bull attack. Its very sad when people abuse/or train train thier pit bull to be violent, they can be such nice dogs.
