It depends on the nature of the balisong. A BM42 with it's skeletonized Ti handles and stainless steel blade is dishwasher safe (I prefer top-rack so that the knives aren't right next to the heating element.) Others with exotic inserts need different treatment.
I have a can of Radio Shack Electronic Cleaner cat# 64-4327. Works well but it has a brush instead of a spray like their Flux Remover that Gollnick praises so highly. When this can is kicked I'll buy some of that. I'm sure it works even better.
I use normal dish washing liquid. Just put a drop on each side of each pivot pin, as if it were oil, and manipulate for a little while. Just don't get too much soap on it, or you will get it on your handles ... Then just rinse it off good, and reaply your lubricant of choice. I also use a nylon bristled brush for stubborn gunk. Tooth brushes work good, but a gun brush works great. Remember, plastic bristles only, not metal! I don't mean a bore brush, they come in plastic and metal, I mean a parts brush. Very similar to a tooth brush, but it usualy has a thiner head and stiffer bristles...
I use Brake clean or some decent type of electrical spray cleaner, a work of caution, use either in a well ventilated area or you'll get a little dizzy . I have used White lighting but switched to Miltech
I just run it under the tap, and blow dry with compressed air. Lube after drying. For the tough stuff, a little Goof-off and a corse medical bandage wrap. Simple green works well too. Just make sure to dilute it, otherwise it's known to attack base metals.
I've used Simple Green also Tony..., but yeah...you do have to dilute it and get the job done quickly...works well though! Actually I used to use it lots, but now mostly the electical flux stuff...
