I came across few bars and wondering about RC levels suitable for knives such as puukkos.

Anyone has any experience with this steel? Is it any good? Any tips on working it?

Thank You in advance!

Silver steel is a high carbon , clean, quality cutlery steel that has been out around a while. It's not a new powder steel but it can make quality stuff if done properly. It has very low amounts of other elements but enough to take it out of the plain "carbon steel" category such as 1070, 1080, 1095, etc.

I'd put it closer to O-1 or W2 or perhaps somewhere in between. It's alloys, such as chrome are in small quantities and won't make carbides, nor produce corrosion resistance but it will help in the hardening procedure helping to harden all the way through and not face harden with a soft interior ( like very cheap chinese or pakistani files). Same with the other alloys. All there for a purpose .

Old school but still capable of high quality tools.

Thank you gentlemen. I am doing some research about heat treatment of this steel and very little information is posted anywhere.
Any idea what RC is good for this steel?
Thabk you

HT it like W1 or 1095. - 1475F austenitize and fast oil quench. Temper twice at 400F. Should be right at Rc 60-61. You can bump the temper to 425-450F for a slightly tougher baled at Rc59-60 if it will get harder use.

This is a good example of needing to carefully read and deduce all the info given in online selling sites. Many eBay sellers deliberately mis-describe things, or in some cases, it just sounds different. Read the full description and quantities before deciding to buy.
That heading for that steel looks like 1" by 1/8" by 13" of silver steel. What it is, is one piece of 1/8" round stock 13" long.
Caveat Emptor!

amikee would be far better to order some W2 from Aldo and get all the info for the steel as well as exactly what he wanted. If he is in the UK, he will have to use other sources. (this is why filling out your profile is very important)

The op had called me to ask about what I knew of silver steel and I told him what I know.... Very little! But iirc, he mentioned that he lives here in the states but has a friend in the uk who is placing the order and then having it shipped to him. He also indicated that there were several photos taken of the bar stock and showed slight rust. He said they are actually bars that are .25" x 1" x 13". I was surprised to hear about silver steel in bar form as well. And If I remember right it was for key stock? Which would explain bars.

I am waiting for photos from my brother. Seller indeed confirmed twice that those are flat bars. From the info off of the boxes it appears to be some older stock made by Peter Stubs out of Warrington. I will let you know as soon as I get some photos.
Thank You very much!

Ok. Turned out the seller made a mistake in the description. They were not "FLATS" but tiny square bars. By tiny I mean 1/8" x1/8" x about 13". My brother sticked one in the drinking straw without any problems. Seller was contacted and will make a refund. Oh well. Thank You all for all the help. It was a good chance to have some silver steel on the American continent.

True, although I did send him a question to make sure he means "flats" 1"x1/8".
Oh well. Seller said no problem with return and will issue a refund. I appreciate all your help friends.
