I....keep... lookin at em but just can't figure out the USE. A box cutter? Looks GREAT for that. But the replaceable blade cutters are cheaper.

I just can't envision the EDC application of such a knife in most outdoor or "around the house" uses.

What am I missing?

Mostly opening taped boxes, breaking down cardboard boxes for our recycling barrel and opening plastic bubblepacks, but also zipties, salami, hotdog buns, paper (pages out of magazines), removing splinters, piercing/cutting raquetballs to put onto tips of practice swords, etc. :)

I pretty much agree with you.

To me it looks like nothing more than a very expensive box cutter/utility knife.

If I want a knife for that I'll just go buy a Stanley Utility Knife. I like knives to be knives. I don't want an $80 box cutter :).

Plus the Dodo has such a huge handle for such a small blade. I'd just rather have something more practical like a Salsa.

Well, I'm waiting on my Yojimbo, which should arrive today. I think it should have a much more useful blade style...now, where is that darn UPS guy? :D

My list is a lot like the above, though I'm not fond of salami. ;) Here's a thread with more uses:

Others have mentioned Martial Blade Craft ("MBC") applications (it's ball lock MBC rated). Here's a thread from the Spyderco site that discusses MBC with the Dodo:

When I first saw the Dodo, my reaction was to dismiss it. After handling one, I changed my mind. I think the Dodo design is brilliant. The ergonomics are outstanding. It's a "little big knife." The larger handle with a smaller blade gives you both more leverage and control than the typical blade to handle ratio.

I carry mine at work where we have a strict "under 2 and 1/2 inches" blade length limit backed up by a federal criminal statute. (18 U.S.C. Sec. 930). It has more or less replaced numerous "gentleman's" knives I used to carry here.

And the handle isn't really all that big. I typically carry mine in my shirt pocket and it doesn't come close to sticking out.

I do everything above, and whittle with it too. Sure, its not the best design for that, but if you use belly part, it works great. And the handle just rocks. Sure, you can get a box cutter for $10, but it wont have near the ergonomics of the Dodo, and it wont be as good for EDC, and it wouldnt be as pretty as a nice blue Dodo.

I pretty much had the same attitude about the DODO that FOM and the other guys had about the little blade. I bought one mainly because I have an affection for weird, "one of kind" knives. I was very pleasantly surprised. The point on the Dodo I found to be an extremely valuable tool. Now I do find the serrated one to be a little more utilitarian the the PE version. It is truly a knife you have to do your own "hands on" test to realize just how many uses that there are for them.

I mail out a lot of packages during the week. I have found the Dodo extremely handy for cutting tape with one hand and trimming paper to size to wrap up packages with. I carry it along a conventional EDC ( which is usually my big Dyad, Renegade, Spyderhawk, Military and a few others). I find the Dodo to be the handiest sidekick. You just simply have to use it to discover the versatility. But I can see how you guys came up with that opinion but I will now vehemently defend the little "reverse S" razor. :)
