what do you do when liner fails?

I've had a AFCK liner-lock for a while now. I've used it for a long time and for many different tasks. Yesterday when I was digging for worms, the liner slipped and the blade closed on my knuckles. Should I chalk this one up as a fluke... or should I retire her?

I agree with the above suggestion; send the knife to Angieland(aka Benchmade Warranty Dept.)

Ouch! Did you get cut bad? Or cut at all? I know if I did that with my AFCK I'd be in trouble with the edge I have on it. That's my biggest fear is a lock failing and the blade closing forcefully on my fingers.

I'd get it repaired, but start using it for lighter duty tasks. Get the new AFCK with an Axis lock if you want to use it as a shovel and be sure dirt doesn't get into the lock. Or better yet get a fixed blade for that if you must use a knife to dig. :)

One thing ya gotta remember with a liner lock is that the fit is critical between the tang and the lock.

Dirt and oil getting between the two, can cause a failure of the lock.

I used to use White Lightening Lube, and when it gets on the tang between the locking bar and the notch it makes the locking bar slide under compression.

I cleaned the area with solvent and my problem was solved.

Get yourself a lockback and save the knuckles further embarrasment.

Liners can fail at any time after being fine the day before. The day you need it for defense is not the day you need it to fail.

I like em, but don't trust em.

I knew Cold Steel made shovels but I didn't know Benchmade did.;)

Sew the fingers back on?

Considering all the dirt that probably got into the knife and all, combined with the very odd twists and turns and pressures you were subjecting the knife to, I wouldn't worry about it. It could have happened to a lot of liner locks. I wouldn't blame that particular knife. Hell, for what you were doing an Axis Lock could have failed just as easily.

If you insist on digging you might try something with a secondary lock like the LAWKS system from CRKT.

This may sound stupid, and it is. I had just replied to that thread I started about "Favorite type of locks" and said how i liked to close ae lockback one handed. I was practicing the technique when i pushed the blade to far and WHAm the serrated portion of my AR cut into my middle finger right in the middle. Owch!

It wasn't too bad, but it bled quite a bit and as with all of my knife-related slipups i had to keep it on the down-low so that my mother wouldnt decide to retire all my knives.

Thanks for the input. I don't think sending it back would be right. This AFCK has a spyder-hole and has seen lots of use. If this were less than a year old, it would have been on its way already. I think I'll keep it around the house for light chores, but I'll take a fixed blade (damn it... why did I sell my Fallkniven) or frame lock the next time I go fishing. As for my fingers... I only got my index finger really good, but I think the cold weather stopped the bleeding pretty quickly.

Your mother? You must be a fairly young member. (Somewhere between 7 and 17 I assume?) That's cool.

Unless you're in your 30s or 40s and then it would just plain FUNNY!:D

I totally sympathize. When I was a kid I RARELY told my mom when I got hurt because it always ended up with something being taken away from me or not being allowed to go what ever place it was that I got hurt again. As far as my mom was concerned there were no real ACCIDENTS, only bad things and bad places. Welcome youngin'!:D

As far as closing lockbacks, I usually hold the knife backwards in my hand with the slot in the handle that the knife closes into facing into my palm. I then use my middle finger to squeeze the lock and use my thumb to close the knife 90-degrees until the tang touches the web of my hand between my first finger and my thumb. Then I rotate the knife so the slot points away from my palm and use my thumb to close it the rest of the way. It's done with one hand and takes about 2 seconds with practise. It's been safe for me every time. I hope I could describe it well for you.

56, actually.

Hah. No. I'm 14. And last year I dropped el Buck Knight on my foot blade down and it didn't heal for months.

So my mom would figure Me+Knives=Bad when it's really Me+Idiocy+Knives=Bad, and someday I'll learn how to subtract the Idiocy :D

That's a great description. I'll try that! Egh...I'll probably amputate my thumb ;)

I'm moving away from folders and heading in the fixed route as far as collecting. I'll be getting a Becker neck knife soon. With my luck, it will fall out of the sheath and I'll get a surprise-castration.

Ow :barf:
