What do you do while you wait?

I find myself in a precarious place. While I'm getting anxious for some pieces I'm waiting for to arrive, I find I order more things.

Lately I've been getting really "itchy" for my Deryk Munroe Chimera, which is on hold because of a shortage of Talonite. I've found myself ordering more knives to hedge against future knife itch.

How do you guys handle the wait? I suppose patience is something I will develop as I become more mature.

I am sort of enjoying waiting for some knives to be made.

I have a PJ Tomes 'moose' two-blade double lockback folder with 52100 steel and stag scales, a Schuyler Lovestrand Hunter with Mastodon Ivory scales, a Tim Herman plain Sliver model with a D2 blade on order.

The wait is sort of pleasurable in a sick, sweaty, sleepless, excited, and frenetic sort of way.

Oh, I have paid no money on deposits. These guys don't do that sort of thing.

Handle it !?!!?!?!?

Are you Supposed to handle it ??

Ok My regimen is to look at MANY pix. Its almost satisfying. I go to Arizona, Robertson, Knifeart, ebay, Blade gallery and so on. Ok .... Some times .... ahhh alot of times ... the need for instant gratification causes one of these unscrupulous vendors to procure a few of my hard earned greens. (Damnit Why do they have to post pictures of that stuff and then have that *usually ships in 24 hours thingy on it*)

Ummmm Maybe I shouldnt chime in on this one. Im obviously a very poor role model.

Boriqua,
Luckily for me, the online sites rarely have anything for lefties, and even when they do, it's not usually something on my "must have" list. I check through all the forums, and most of the online custom dealers multiple times daily. I know I have some mental illness that can only be lessened by a new custom. I don't think there is a cure.

It was WHILE I was waiting that I ended up in line for a Chimera!

The need for new is only slowed (marginally) by bankruptcy...

I guess we're lucky to have multiple "Knife Asylums" on the internet. Darn school...darn Seattle...if I was at home, I could go to the beach nearly every day, and on the off days, hang out at Mayo or Onion's shops.

I guess what I really should do while I wait for a new knife, is spend my idle time working more hours in the lab, so I can get a few extra $$$ for more toys!

Wouldn't it be neat to be able to sit in a garage in Kapolei and think up new mechanisms? Oh wait!...that's what Ken does

I guess the real problem is thinking up something new, easily patentable, and cheap and easy to manufacture.

Tom,
I do have to disagree with you: "With the right lock you would never have to buy a knife again!"

The right lock design would mean that I'd have money to buy all kinds of other knives!

OR

I could do homework and lab write-ups while I wait for my knives (what a novel idea!

I should say that one of the reasons that waiting for special knives to be made to order does not hurt me is because I can still buy other knives from any maker at a custom knife show, or from internet knife dealers like Les Robertson, Larry Connelly, the Sadows, and Dave Harvey. I only buy when I see something I like and have cash available or can sell some of wives jewelry. Sometimes I cut back on cat food (that's all we can afford to eat) and toilet paper just so I can afford to buy more knives. I sure do miss my first born son, but all the knives I got for him make it all worthwhile. And I have two more kids and a wife I could probably trade for more knives if I have too. My wife seem to understand that depriving me of knives is to be avoided at any cost. The consequences would be just plain catastrophic

while I'm waiting, I pester and hassle the maker(s) until they can't stand me anymore. At best they won't let me order more knives from them. At worst I end up w/some funky knives. This is a good way to force yourself into making your own knives so you can only blame yourself for any waiting.

I just generally get into a heavy slump..wear womens clothes, drink alot and abuse small furry animals...Other than that no problems..I usually pass on getting a knife if theres a wait or I look for a dealer/owners who might sell.. The wait that killing me the most is the one Alan Folts is working on but I KNOW it will be awesome when finished..

I can identify with that feeling

I've got two knives that will only be ready in 5-6 months so in the meanwhile I save up for when I can order again.

I try to indulge in my other hobbies (PC games) to resist the urge to get a knife 'fix'. This gets especially bad when I go into places like KnifeArt or RCC and I see a knife I want that's available NOW.

Mitch,

You're right about the itch to continue to place orders for more knives while waiting. I have four knives on order with three different makers at this time. Man, the only thing that's stopping me from placing another order at this time is a quick look at my bank statement. I'm pretty much tapped out in the savings account after those knives. And I've promised my wife and kids that we're headed back to Honolulu to see the folks during the coming spring break. Man...Mitch, I don't know how you do it brother...I never had that kind of money to spend on custom folders when I was a student at U-Dub! Take care now!

I compulsively search the archived forums for mention of whatever blade I want/am getting. It helps to reconfirm that I'm doing the "right thing" and that I really *need* that Spyderco...or Dozier...or butterfly knife...

I actually have had to construct a list in the past few years to keep track of what is on order from whom. I keep files of letters sent to confirm orders and all reciepts. I plan what I want to order next and go about confirming that order. Every once and awhile a knife arrives and everything is ok for a day or two and then its on to the next thing.
