What do you do with a new grinder

Well for me it was test it out. I grabbed the first piece of steel I could find and went at it. after a little bit of time I had what was looking like a knife in my hands. I refined the shape a bit more, marked out some lines and finished it up and this is what I have today.

I know its not perfect but it was completely an on the go project and mainly free hand. If you haven't figured it out yet, it is small, OK tiny:D

All I had was a small piece of 1084 about 4 1/4" long when I started. Once I realized that I was actually making something I started searching for something to use as scales and pins. I had a couple of scrap pieces of natural linen micarta laying around that I just couldn't bring myself to throw out and a bent piece of 3/16" stainless rod that I actually has put in the waste pile. I combined that with a piece of my over ordering of 1/16" pin stock and I had everything I needed. Even the sheath is a cutoff that was in the scrap pile.

So the knife's specs are:

Overall length: 4"
Blade length: 1.5"
Handle length:2"
Steel: 1/8" 1084

Home HT so I have no idea of what the Rc is, but it skated a new file out of the quench. I think I will call it The Scrapper, because it was made out of scrap:p and it will be going in my tool box at work for opening boxes.

Looks lke a nice little back pocket knife! I sure wish I could convince "the boss" to let me buy a grinder... :(

You just have to convince her that having a grinder will free up your time so you have more time to spend with here and do the things that she want you to.

I think your "mini's" will give Stacy a run for his money. Great job and congrats on your new setup

:D It's 8 and I'm debating going back out to see the KMG for the rest of the evening... :p

Nice knife though!

It's not even close to being either the size of Stacey's miniatures or the quality/detail of them either:o. I can how ever hope to get that good.

I wish I could do some more grinding, but I am out of steel, and I have to be ready to start packing everything up. Looks like the house I am renting is being sold out from under me and I can't find anything that I will be able to work out of. So my only choice is to move back to Ontario and set up shop at my mothers till I get settled in there. I could stop making knives, but that isn't an option. I have 2 more to finish up but I can do that without the grinder.

I wish you the best of luck with everything and hope you get grinding soon!

There was more learning curve that I expected when I got my good grinder, just wait 'till you get used to it... that knife already looks awesome.

I think I learned a lot working completely with hand tools for the last year. also I paid attention to every grinder post once I decided to build one. I made a mental note of every little pointer and put them all to use. I also think it helped that the whole blade fit on the belt with room to spare:p

Well its only 1% more that I would pay for steel I bought in Manitoba. Even when we buy from another province or country we as Canadians are supposed to remit the proper taxes voluntary, like that ever happens:rolleyes:In the long run, no matter where I live I will still purchase most of my supplies from you, just because I like the service I get:thumbup:

Nice Unky!! So cool that you've got that baby up and running finally!

Great looking little user, and I like the name. Looks like a comfy handle.

Grind away brother!!

Only a month behind schedule:o I had originally planned on mid January, early February. Limited income because of the elbow problems. I am having a problem with tracking if I lean into it but I think that is just that the hole for my small wheel is a tad oversize and it shifts under hard pressure. Once I get my threaded inserts in there that should take care of the problem so I am not worried about it. The only reason I was leaning into it was to see if I could stall it, it slows down momentarily then comes back up to speed:thumbup:

Nice little utility knife.
What is that handle material?

RE the tracking, try adding more belt tension (pull the arm out more)
and then try that grind again.

I believe that most tracking problems are solved with more tension.

did ya get that video loaded yet ?

I tried more tension and that is when I saw the 3" wheel lean to the side a bit. If I crank the bolt down enough to keep it in place I overload the bearings and get some bad heat build up. I don't have any problem running on just the 8" wheel. It doesn't matter any how right now, I have to start pulling everything down to get ready to move back to Ontario. If thing s go like I think they will I will be about 4 hours east of you in a few months.

I got the video loaded but it was just sound and green screen:confused: Thats what I get for using MS movie maker I am going to try again later in the week, it plays fine on my computer, just going to youtube it screws up.

the Handle is natural linen Micarta.
